Purpose of the plan : To propose opportunities for Pfizer Inc . to execute a wide-range of strategic changes to transform all areas of its business , grow current and new medicines , and to drive productivity improvements

Pfizer Inc , founded in 1849 , is a corporation dedicated to better health and greater access to health care for people and their animals Headquartered in New York , Pfizer is the world 's largest research-based pharmaceutical company . Everyday approximately 98 ,000 employees in more that 150 countries work to discover , develop , manufacture and deliver quality , safe and effective prescription medicines to the masses Pfizer has a broad portfolio , with strengths in the areas of cardiovascular disease , central nervous system diss , inflammatory disease , metabolic diss , infectious diseases and oncology

This business plan represents a comprehensive internal strategy to assist in addressing the areas of opportunity currently not being explored in to improve internal business operations . This strategy depends on cooperation from all departments within Pfizer 's organizational structure . The five essential components of this plan are organizational structure , financial strategies , operational framework , vertical integration and diversification . In these five areas , 15 recommendations and supporting action step are proposed for implementation over the course of this long-term plan . In summary form these recommendations are as follows

Implementation of management maintenance through regularly schedule meetings to eliminate bottle-necking of information within the current matrix structure , clear definition of goals and expectations through management , and additional management training to increase leadership abilities

Examine and establish new billing processes to improve effective cash flow management

    The most appropriate organizational structure for Riordan Manufacturing to implement a new customer management system would be a bureaucratic style. A bureaucratic organization relies on standardizing work processes for coordination and control.     Merck had a 14% increase in sales between 1997 and 1998 and 22% increase in sales from 1998 – 1999, and a 13% annual increase in earnings over the same period. Merck’s business strategy consists of two parts: (1) developing and marketing new drugs through internal research, and (2) developing partnerships with smaller biotechnology companies. Since 1995, Merck had launched 15 new products that earned $5.9 billion on sales of $32.7 billion. Furthermore, Merck may agree to license new drugs from other firms and with its larger capital and greater assets, can assume the risk of submitting the drug through various regulatory approval phases. If the drug becomes profitable, Merck can earn significant cash flows while paying a royalty to the licensor. However, most important is the option that Merck has in deciding when to abandon or continue on this project (deferability or optionality). If Merck reaches a point when its expected NPV is negative, it can simply abandon the project. As a licensee, Merck can allow smaller biotechnology firms to focus on research and development. These smaller firms often have smaller budgets and are not financially or personnel equipped to handle the costly and long FDA approval process, and the subsequent marketing, distribution, and sales of new drugs.
