Functions of Management and Roles of Management McDonald’s is known the world over. It started as a little Bar-B-Q drive-in in 1940. Eight years later is when it became McDonald’s as we know it. The menu was reduced to the main staples and the inexpensive hamburger was the highlight. A year later came the introduction of fries. In 1954, Ray Kroc came to sell multi-mixers to the McDonald brothers and ended up going into business with them, which started their expansion. By 1958, they had already sold 100 million burgers. Today they lead the food service industry with more than 33, 500 local restaurants serving approximately 69 million people in 119 countries each day. (2) McDonald’s is constantly trying to grow. To achieve this they need to work on all four functions of management – planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Planning helps develop new menus, ad campaigns, updating of locations, and expansion. Organizing helps get these changes out to all the stores and employees for training, setting up the new locations, and hiring the appropriate personnel. Leading makes sure this all stays consistent with the mission and flows smoothly. Controlling looks at everything as a whole and analyzes it to see how it is working and when changes need to be made. All these functions come together to form one unit. Planning at McDonald’s has resulted in changes to the menu, updated buildings, and expansion of the company. When McDonalds officially became the burger joint we know today, it started with hamburgers, cheeseburgers, soft drinks, milk, coffee, potato chips, and a slice of pie. The main staple was the inexpensive hamburger. The inexpensive hamburger is still the star today, but there are tons of other options available.
