Competitive vs. Collaborative Intervention Strategies
In the volatile world of the semiconductor industry, finding that niche or that competitive advantage is imperative in order to ride out the cyclical aspects of the market. The Air Products
(AP) Gilbert Facility is the outsource entity for several leading Original Equipment
Manufacturers (OEM). AP builds new and refurbishes the OEM’s semiconductor equipment which is used in several wafer fabrication facilities throughout the world. Unfortunately they are not the only company able to perform this service.
The management at the Gilbert facility realized they needed a competitive advantage in order to keep and obtain future business. Sure, they’re good at what they do but cannot meet the price structures of the Mom & Pop competitors. The plan to gain this advantage was to work toward ISO 9001-2000 certification. As explained on the International Organization for
Standardization’s web site, “ISO 9001:2000 is now firmly established as the globally accepted standard for providing assurance about the quality of goods and services in supplier-customer relations” (“In the Global Economy,” n.d.). The AP web site states, “Improving product quality, service, and overall value to customers is at the heart of our strategies. As an instrumental part of this strategy, Air Products has adopted ISO 9001 as our model for quality assurance.” (“Air
Products ISO certification,” n.d.).
To accomplish this goal the use of the competitive strategy intervention process of
Integrated Strategic Change (ISC) would best help in changing the organization and its current strategy. Following the process, as outlined in our textbook (Cummings & Worley, 2005, pg
452), this strategic management initiative can be implemented. In actuality, I was an integral part of the activities employed

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to define and subjectively measure ISO 9001 effectiveness as the achievement of the standard’s objectives and determine its impact on the performance dimensions of service companies related to product/service quality, operational and financial performance. Design/methodology/approach – An empirical study was carried out using a sample of 100 ISO 9001:2008 certified service companies. Data were obtained from the quality managers of the companies through a structured questionnaire. Exploratory factor analyses are applied to extract the latent factors of the indicators of ISO 9001 objectives and performance dimensions. Multiple linear regression analyses are also applied in order to determine the impact of ISO 9001 effectiveness on the performance dimensions of service companies. Findings – The findings of the present study confirm the dimensionality of the ISO 9001 effectiveness (evaluated by the degree of achievement of the standard’s objectives, namely prevention of nonconformities, continuous improvement and customer satisfaction focus) and reveal its significant contribution to the performance of the service companies. The product/service quality and operational performance of the service companies are directly and…
