Mi Mommy Gilb Summary

In the story Mi Mommy by Gilb, the author explains his rough relationship he had with his mother. He started by explaining a dream he had of his mother. As the reader I noticed even though he didn’t talk to her, and did not approve of her life, he still loved her. After finding out his mother was a career alcoholic, I found it hard to believe he cared for her as much as he did. Gilb explains how his mom didn't really support his and how she wasn’t involved in his adult life. I expected a far different reaction from Gilb when he found out he was in the hospital. However because he tried so hard to please her, and still loved he was willing to put the past behind him to see her. I think Gilbs essays “fools stories” applies to this story. Because
he did not approve of her lifestyle, I think he tried to be the best he could be. I think his mother's negative life motivated him to learn more, and accomplish more. His mother may not have taught him the wisdom he has now, but I think her life pushed him to learn it on his own.
