September 22 marked the first day of the season of pumpkin spice, commonly known as fall. To many white girls around the country, this is the best time of year, because during this time, society has once again deemed sweaters, pumpkin spice beverages, and unnecessary photos and decorations socially acceptable. Personally, although I do enjoy wearing cozy sweaters, the other common “joys” of fall disgust me. Basically, I find New England’s reaction to fall quite Katastrophic.…

The documentary Hot Coffee by Susan Saladoff was exceptionally inspiring to contemplate the commonly accepted ideas on the United States legal system. Hot Coffee begins by clarifying the truth behind the lawsuit of Liebeck v. McDonalds Restaurants. After presenting what really happened to Stella Liebeck, the documentary leads into the tort reform movement that has been confining civil rights since the beginning. Showing how dissembled the tort reform has been, Hot Coffee presents the spilled coffee case and many other cases about how the tort reform is affecting different people, and the reproductions of constitutional rights being relinquished with, or without, knowledge of it occurring.…

Drinking Coffee Elsewhere is a very interesting story that brings up a number of thought-provoking issues in a relatively short format. Among these are questions of race, identity, and stereotyping. The narrator of the story is a young woman named Dina who feels lonely and confused in her new surroundings. As a poor, African American female at Yale (which the narrator portrays as a rich, male, and subtlety racist institution) she has difficulty adapting to the expectations of the university. From the very beginning, her differences set her apart from her classmates, until, from her point of view, she becomes a pariah, invisible and despised by the community. Of course, one must view these complaints with some skepticism. The narrator deliberately isolates herself with off-hand comments and antisocial behavior. She seems to take pride in her jarring attitude toward authority and friendliness. Only on rare occasions do we see her treated poorly by the other characters. While her behavior is rude and obnoxious, they seem to be welcoming and sincere in their attempts to reconcile her depression. It soon becomes apparent that Dina finds comfort in her intentional isolation. She takes some satisfaction from stereotyping others unfairly and irrationally, since stereotypes provide a simple and lazy detour around human interaction.…
Starbucks opened operations in Seattle's Pike Place Markets in 1971 with the future aim of providing coffee to a number of restaurants and surrounding bars. With the recruitment of Howard Schultz who led the marketing and retail efforts of Starbucks in 1982, the company took a change in direction through the views of Schultz, who after visiting Italy tried to adapt the same principles in order to a strong bar culture. Schultz then utilized Starbucks ability to provide quality coffee beans and opened up a new store called Il Giornale, which brewed coffee from these particular beans. By 1987, Il Giornale had decided to take over the assets of Starbucks and also, further changed its name to Starbucks Corporation. By the end of the year, Starbucks had increased the number of stores to 17 and furthered its location span by entering Chicago and Vancouver.…
Drinking Coffee Elsewhere opens with the idea of the main character Dina being labeled as an “outsider” at her college orientation at Yale. When the story starts she is not being out casted by her peers, but instead herself. Her actions in return make her become considered an “outsider” to her other Yale peers. Dina was a new student at school and was supposed to be participating in a game called Trust. After she finds out the rules to the game she says “No way, No Fucking Way.”(Pg 117) Her inappropriate answer shows how being considered an “outsider” was not forced upon Dina from her peers, she brought it on herself. Dina does this again when she is with her counselor playing another one of the orientation games. This time the kids are in a group going around basically introducing themselves and are to name an object to describe themselves. When it is Dina’s turn to participate in the game she says “My name is Dina, and if I had to be any object, I guess I’d be a revolver.”(Pg 118) Dina once again shows how she is making herself more and more of an “outsider” with responses like this. When she answers with revolver it is so uncommon and disturbing that it causes Dina to receive one year’s worth of Psychiatric Counseling. This in…
Preview: Every morning when I wake up the first thing I do after brushing my teeth is walk straight to the coffee pot. I pour myself a hot rich cup of coffee to start the day off. On my way out the door I grab my go cup and fill it up. When I finally get to school I get myself another cup of coffee. How many miller grams of caffeine do you think I have drank at this point? According to the Mayo Clinic a healthy amount of caffeine for an adult is 200 to 300 miller grams each day which equals to 2 to 4 cups of coffee. By the time I had my third cup of coffee which should be my limit, it was only 9am. My point is that we need to be aware of how much caffeine take in and how it can affect you. Today I will be telling you about how easy it is to overdose on caffeine and its negative effects.…
My interest in coffee (as a substance, not a drink) began when I met a special friend, Niknok. I met him after I left the publishing house. It was the time when I needed someone to talk with about letting go of pains, circumstances, and people who equally caused me unbearable pains in my journey to life. Niknok doesn’t drink coffee at all. He doesn’t even drink soda nor soft drink. He doesn’t eat chocolates. He doesn’t want caffeine in his blood. He wants water all the time. Good thing that coffee needs water. At least we have something to share together. The coffee talk between us started the night after a late visit to a high school classmate’s wake. We didn’t have dinner that night. He picked me up from work and then directly went to the wake. We both don’t take in anything in a funeral so we both starved. On our way home, he noticed my extraordinary silence. That he knew of course that I was starving; that my blood is craving for coffee. And so he drove endlessly to look for a coffee shop. Luckily, we found one…really one in the midst of nowhere! And so he started talking about coffee. I was stunned but I intently listened to him. I told myself, “Finally, Niknok…
