Activity 3.5 – Two Descriptions Paper (Revised)
English Composition

Module 3

1st Description: The wooded area surrounding the park has a mystifying feel with the sun setting and the strange odor of a dank basement coming from its small pond. The air feels sticky and warm this time of the year and the trees blocking the breeze makes it even more muggy than usual. The open and empty field gives me a feeling of isolation and the darkening skies has an ominous look. I can hear the shrieking muffled sounds of animals nearby, but without being able to see what’s beyond the blurry tree line, it’s hard to know if what I’m hearing is wild and aggressive or tame and timid. I can taste the musty fall air on my tongue as the breeze

The thick tree lines and vast open fields bring a sense of freedom and grandeur. The brilliant light shining like beacon of hope with the soft calming breeze flowing across the field is refreshing and pure like a baby after a warm bath. The air seems to be free and clear of the city’s poisonous air pollution and the soft sounds of birds makes it all too refreshing, like a beautiful day on the beach. With quiet clean monuments and buildings dancing across the landscape, the look of peace and quiet seems to be present at last. As the blue crisp skies begin to darken across the brilliant blue pond, the shimmering light hitting the trees is as beautiful as the sun setting on the Catalina Island on a bright blue day with soft clouds flowing across the sky. I have the taste of fresh fruit on my tongue in my mouth as I take a long deep breath, and realize how much the soft green grass adds to the peacefulness in the park. I can hear the cheerful wildlife scampering beyond the tree line, like young children frolicking in their mother’s front yard. As the quiet darkness sets in, and with the city brilliant lights in the background, the serene park makes the bustling city seem peaceful once …show more content…

In the first description I selected words that would appeal to someone from the city, not used to being alone in an unknown environment. I described the loneliness and almost spooky feeling of the vast park as dusk was approaching. The feeling of dark and dreary was the tone I tried to create for the reader. Not knowing what the pond really looked like, made it easy to paint a picture of a clean body of water, or dirty watering hole. I chose words in the second description that made a person feel like the park was a breath of fresh air and a break from the hustle and bustle of the city life. The second description also had words that described beauty and joyful peace; while the first description used words that made a person feel alone and depressed. I tried to use figurative language that might make a person connect more with the description I was providing. My feelings towards each area were added to create the sense of true emotion towards the park I was sitting in. The words used to show confusion and mystery in the first description could also lead a person to feel scared before ever realizing the park was as peaceful as the second

I take a walk in Wissahickon Park after dropping my twins at their school. The trails are muddy from heavy rains and temporary streams have formed along my path. (I have an hour before I need to open my laptop and get to work on my day job; not all poets do whatever they like.) The fuscia flowers of the redbud tree are brilliant against the green of early leafing shrubs. Birdsong is all around me. I note some of the birds--if they are bright enough and close enough to the trail or I recognize their song. A few chipmunks scurry among the leaves on the forest floor. A cardinal lights on a branch nearby, a red flash. A robin lands on the trail ahead, scraping his yellow beak against a rock.…

We begin our story in the small, beachy forest town of Nopicopolople (pronounced Nop-ee-cop-el-lop-el). Every day, the sun rose brightly over town, and waves crashed upon the beach, creating ripples in the sand. The cool breeze swept over the grass, carrying the sweet scent of dandelions and lavender with them. Every night, the moon shone brightly, letting the sun rest, ending the day with an alluring sunset.…

As a child, I was raised my whole life in the country side. My mother and I had lived for years in a lonely shack at the edge of the small village we called home. At the very edge of the village was an eerie forest, a forest that seemed to beckon unwary fools into entering it. I was always told as a child to never go near the forest, especially at night. Some people say that a bear lives there, while others say that a serial killer lives there, and some even say that a monster lives there, either way the forest is always portrayed with death. I remember various occasions in which I would wake up for reasons unknown, only to find myself outside in my backyard staring at the edge of the forest, the soft moonlight caressing my bare skin, the crisp night air followed by the refreshing scent of grass. On one occasion I thought I heard a…

It suddenly turns into a cold and rainy day in my hometown of Autumn Burrow. Damp and mellow was what my town felt like today. Autumn Burrow's the place where everyone works day and night, and urban myths and rumors of weird encounters with weird creatures. Such as vagabonds, shadows, or any other type of phenomena. I never have actually seen a ghost roaming around town, but it would be a weird experience if I ever saw one. Today, I plan to make a trip to Autumn Burrow's deep forest to find even more mysterious species, and to see if all the urban legends about the monster are true. I then start to gather all of my belongings: a satchel, my journal and pencil, and my beige trench coat. I set foot out of my lovely, wooden home, and headed on down over to Autumn Burrow's timber lands. I then start to grab my journal and pencil out of my satchel and record how I felt as of now.…

Now the atmosphere of my world seems bleak and dull as if I’m living in a horror film, I wasn’t the only one affected by this, the horrible atmosphere washed over the people of this town. Adding to this atmosphere it rained more often. The rain would bring with it an eerie fog that would sneak between everything like an ominous snake. The whole setting sent a chill down my spine every time I stepped foot outside of my house. As if the fog wasn’t enough, the woods that surrounded the town were just hair-raising. I swore I could hear noises, noises unlike any woodland creatures. They sounded almost human, but not quite. The trees themselves moved in quite an abnormal fashion, as if they were live soul bearing creatures. My heart skipped a beat whenever a branch creaked, I began to become very paranoid.…

We jumped back in the car and hit the road. There wasn’t much to see heading into California. It is very similar to Vegas, in that, they are both lush with green grass and towering palm trees. But once we hit Laguna Beach, it was like a whole new world. It was a small town filled with very friendly people. Shiny, luxurious cars lined the streets, at least every third one being a convertible. People filled the beaches and streets, taking in the sunshine, some walking dogs, others bordered by what looked like family or friends. When we pulled up to our hotel, a quaint little Inn; spitting distance from the beach, we were pleasantly surprised. A two level spread of rooms surrounding a swimming pool that was accompanied by a hot sauna made out of an actual wine barrel. The nightly rate wasn’t much, the most we could afford for the planned two nights booked in a paradise called Laguna, so we had prepared for less. We checked in and walked straight to the beaches. Words cannot describe the sights of these beaches. The tide was low and we were able to walk right onto the coral reefs and admire the collected puddles of water and sea life. Beautiful pinkish, orange starfish and prickly, purple sea urchins lined the walls while small fish and hermit crabs explored the territory. The sky was the bluest blue and the sun beamed down on our skin, toasting us the perfect bronze, without a…

Such as: A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green. The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool. On one side of the river the golden foothill slopes curve up to the strong and rocky Gabilan Mountains, but on the valley side the water is lined with trees—willows fresh and green with every spring, carrying in their lower leaf junctures the debris of the winter’s flooding; and sycamores with mottled, white, recumbent limbs and branches that arch over the pool. On the sandy bank underthe trees the leaves lie deep and so crisp that a lizard makes a great skittering if he runs among them. Rabbits come out of the brush to sit on the sand in the evening, and the damp flats are covered with the night tracks of ‘coons, and with the spreadpads of dogs from the ranches, and with the split-wedge tracks of deer that come to drink in the dark.…

I drove through the town and the cool drape of dusk gently pulled itself over a cloudless night sky, delicately revealing overborn and neglected stars. I meandered my way through the streets getting a feel for the place; and it felt just fine. The warm air smelt of eucalyptus, dirt and open fires.…

As you enter the park by pushing its big black gate you can hear the shouting of kids and the air is filled with the voices of people. On the left and right hand side there are many trees with people sitting under them reading books or having picnics. In front there is a path that goes straight and then divides into two, one going to the left and the other to the right. If you take the right path you could hear the shouting of children louder than before. There are kids running here and there playing football in the big field yelling at each other to pass. You could taste the dust in your mouth. Straight ahead there is a big playground full of small children on the slides and roundabouts. You could smell the small pieces of wood that are all over the playground. There is a big blue see-saw in the middle of the playground and on the left of it is a red and green roundabout going round and round like the wheels of a car.…

I took a few minutes to sit down and enjoy the beauty of nature right outside of Marillac Hall on St. John’s campus. I chose this location because I am never really on campus unless I have class. As I sat by the trees on this windy afternoon savoring my Starbucks and black and white cookie, I saw squirrels chasing each other picking at nuts. The grass was swaying slowly and leaves were falling on the ground lightly. The air smelled of fresh air, wet soil and fast food.…

The open meadow establishes a sense of freedom with no boundaries. The soft shade of green is inviting, but also peaceful. October was a little over half gone when Minako came to this small fishing village in southwest Washington State for a five-day stay. Ever since the giant expanse of the Pacific Ocean captivated her some years earlier, she and husband Shigeo had spent two weeks here each July. What drew her to the area this time, though, was an unquenchable desire to see the deserted autumn shoreline, which must be very different from its look in summer. Shigeo had said there was no way he could take off from work, so she decided to leave him at home and take her first solo trip, a prospect she found both daunting and liberating. The low off-season rent was another attraction.…

    My Peaceful Place

Near Point Fermin Park there is a place. It’s a place where I go to get out of my house to cool down, in a bad mood, or there to think about the positive things. When I come to this place I feel free and at ease with myself. I feel like no one can disturb me, nothing can faze me, and nothing can make me upset when I am here. When I am here I feel the nice, warm sun on my face and the breeze blowing through my hair. I smell the ocean when the breeze passes me as I sit there on the edge of the rock. When I am here I feel rebellious, blessed, and hopeful. Sitting there I hear and see beautiful things. The sounds I hear are the waves splashing on the rocks. I see the bubbles when the water is done splashing on the rocks. I keep coming here because it’s such an addictive atmosphere. As I sit there on the rock, I hear birds talking to each other, and sometimes I even hear sea lions which are funny to hear. I look up at the big blue sky and see the big cotton candy clouds they look tasty to eat. When looking up, I think about my future and what I can do for it. I think about being successful and making my parents and most importantly myself happy with my future. I love this place. This is my peaceful place.…
