Michael Jordan Leadership Paper
Study of a Contemporary leader When sitting down and thinking about a leader that I wanted to write about, and eventually stand up in front of people and talk about was a lot harder of a thing to do than I originally thought. There are so many different types of leaders that people follow and are drawn to, for so many different reasons. Whether those reasons follow a certain beliefs like that of cults and religions, or if they simply follow leaders because they were just born with all of the necessary skills and attributes that helps them relate to people, everyone follows a certain type of leader because of their own personal reasons. This leads me to why I chose my leader to talk about in this paper. Michael Jordan to me is one of favorite leaders, not only because of the fact that he was the best basketball player to ever play the sport, having earned six world championships with the Chicago Bulls and earning many records during his time playing, but because of how charismatic he was on and off the court. Michael Jordan’s leadership qualities come from more than the skills he displayed on the court, he is a natural born leader, charismatic, has great character and has accomplished more than most. Michael Jordan was born on February 17th, 1963 in Brooklyn New York to his mother Doris and his father James. As a young child Michael Jordan moved to North Carolina, where they lived out in the country, almost completely isolated from the rest of the world. This is why Jordan’s dad put up two basketball hoops in the back yard and this is where Michael could always be found. He didn’t care that the court he was playing on was dirt, or what started off as grass. Michael spent so much time playing basketball there that almost all of the grass was gone in two weeks. Michael played against his older brothers all the time who were bigger, faster and stronger, but no matter how bad they beat him, Michael never showed any sign of disappointment. This actually

He was the overall third draft pick in 1984, behind Hakeem Olajuwon and Sam Bowie. The Bulls’ games lacked support from their fans, and they believed that they might even go out of business. To their advantage and surprise, Michael Jordan brought everyone back to their games and created a new world of basketball (Berger 61). In total, Michael scored over thirty-two thousand points averaging about thirty points per game. He played his position as a guard well, but was great on defense too. He grabbed over two thousand steals and eight hundred blocks in a span of nineteen years (Michael Jordan’s Biography). Another remarkable quality was his high intensity and hyper-competitiveness. As a rookie in the NBA, most people did not expect Michael to go so far. He worked hard with one of the best coaches of all time, Phil Jackson, and led his team along with him (Stein). His opponents believed that it was not even fair to play against him since he was unstoppable. One of his opponents, Michael Cooper from the Los Angeles Lakers, said, “There’s no way I can stop him. As soon as he touches the ball…He goes right, left, over you, around and under you. He twists and turns. And you know he’s going to get the shot off. You just don’t know when and how” (Berger 68). This proves how Michael gave an impression of an almost a God-like man when he…

For my memoir analysis I chose The Basketball Diaries written by Jim Carroll. The book was first published in the United States by Tombouctou Books in 1978, then published and reprinted by Penguin books in 1987. James Dennis Carroll was born on August 1, 1949 in New York. He was of Irish Descent and grew up on New York's Lower East Side. In the sixth grade his brother took notice to his literary talent, so he encouraged him to pursue it. Apart from writing, Carroll was an all-star basketball player throughout his elementary and high school career. He entered the Biddy League (a youth basketball league) at age thirteen and participated in the National High School All Star Game in 1966. Although Carroll was a talented writer and basketball player he was secretly living as a heroin addict. To support his drug addiction Carroll went into prostitution. Although he was prostituting himself, he also wrote poems and attended poetry workshops. He briefly attended Wagner College and Columbia University. Carroll published his first collection of poems while in high school, “Organic Trains”. In 1987 Carroll wrote his second memoir, “Forced Entries: The Downtown Diaries”, which documented his life after high school and into his early adulthood in the New York City music and art scene. Along with his writing he was struggling to kick his drug addiction. In 1978 he moved to California after beating his drug addiction. He started a band called The Jim Carroll band which was based in the San Francisco area. Jim Carroll died of a heart attack on September 11, 2009 at his home in Manhattan.…
