The paring knife
In many relationships, arguments and fights normally happen because both parties love eachother.A relationship can be friendly, family ties wise and even marriage or lovers relationship. The story of “The paring knife,” by Michael Oppenheimer is told by an evident lover who is cleaning with his/her soul mate when he/she finds a knife under the refrigerator and how that event had come to make their relationship stronger. In the story of “The paring knife,” Oppenheimer uses symbolism to illustrate the bond of two lover’s relationship and how that affected their relationship. The paring knife symbolizes arguments that took place in their relationship and that every hardship they have gone through is
a success and one step towards their goals. The author chose the paring knife as the utensil to be found under the refrigerator because usually a knife represents something that peels off or hurts a certain thing. In the story, the protagonist narrates “I remembered something that happened four years before that explained how the knife had gotten under the refrigerator.”(Oppenheimer 1).The narrator shows that this relationship had been together for four years since the awful argument had happened that made the two lovers be extremely angry at each other and this shows how strong the relationship is. Thus the knife could represent the extreme anger and sadness. The woman’s action in the story ironically represents something unique in the story that carries huge task in the apprising of this story. The woman’s action can be seen in the story when the protagonist narrates that “The woman I love came into the kitchen and asked if I was alright.I said, “Yes”. She turned the light on and we looked at the kitchen floor. Nothing much was broken, but the floor was very messy. We both laughed and then went back to bed and made love.”(Oppenheimer 1). The woman shows that she cares for her lover still even if she got angry and that she loves him still. The woman’s actions also symbolizes her belief and confidence in this relationship and that everything they have faced have led them to where they are and that makes them to not forget where they have come from and what they have experienced.
