Michelle Obama proposed the Healthy Hunger Free Kids act in 2010.This act says that there is a minimum and maximum amount of calories that can be given in a student’s lunch; there has only ever been a minimum. HHFK’s minimum is lower than before. It says that a cafeteria can only give water and unflavored 1% or fat-free milk
HHFK is our nation’s effort to provide all children with healthy food in schools. Over 31 million children receive meals from the school lunch program and many children receive most, if not all, of their meals at school. Now with one out of every three children in America considered overweight or obese, schools often are now the center of this national challenge to overcome childhood obesity and improve children’s overall health. With this act they give the schools the funding 4.5 billion dollars
HHFK Requires schools to make information more readily available to parents about the nutritional quality of meals it also requires school districts to be audited every three years to improve compliance with nutritional standards. The problem with this law is that it assumes that all children of any given age will have identical and interchangeable dietary protein and calorie requirements it assumes that proteins are identical and interchangeable; it fails to account for the difference in activity levels, height, weight, or gender. It assumes that all children will receive enough food when they are not at school. On the other hand this law does ensure that students are offered both fruits and vegetables every day of the week; Increase offerings of whole grain-rich foods; Offer only fat-free or low-fat milk; Limit calories based on the age of children being served to ensure proper portion size Increase the focus on reducing the amounts of saturated fat, trans fats, added sugars, and sodium.
