Assignment 2: Chapters 5 & 6
Due date: Monday February 24, 2014
Please upload a correct and readable assignment file (e.g., a text file, a PDF file, or an MS Word file). After uploading the assignment file, you MUST validate it by checking what you uploaded. If you uploaded a wrong file, you can take it back and upload a correct one before the assignment due date. At the time of grading, no credit will be given to a wrong assignment (e.g., an assignment file for a different class) or an unreadable file.
Answer Chapter 6 Data Modeling Problems 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 (p. 207 of the textbook).
Answer Chapter 6 Conversion Problems 1, 5, 6, and 8 (pp. 221–224 of the textbook). [Note: You do not have to list conversion rules in your answer. Just convert ERDs into relational models] [Note: A relational model is a collection of “CREATE TABLE” commands (as shown in pp. 191–203).]
You may use MS Visio Professional software (or any other drawing software) to draw ERDs. For MS Visio Professional Software, please see the “Assignment 2” thread of Discussion.
When submitting your assignment, insert diagrams into an MS Word file and send the MS Word file (or a PDF file generated from the MS Word file); DO NOT SEND/SUBMIT INDIVIDUAL DIAGRAM FILES.
Note: How to insert an MS Visio Diagram into an MS Word Document
1. Draw an ERD.
2. Once finish the ERD, select “Edit/Select All” (or press Ctrl-A).
3. Select “Edit/Copy” (or press Ctrl-C).
4. In MS Word, select “Edit/Paste Special”. (Do NOT select “Paste” Ctrl+V. This will result in a huge MS Word file and you will have difficulties in submitting such a big MS Word file.)
5. Choose “Picture (Windows Metafile)” or “Picture (Enhanced Metafile)” and click “OK”.
6. Then, the MS Visio diagram will be inserted into the MS Word document.
7. Other software programs’ diagrams can be inserted into MS Word similarly.
