As far as I am concerned, it doesn’t matter how many hours we put in our communities, but our passions and good intentions decide how much we can benefit from community service.
When it comes to my valuable experience, I began my community service one month ago, and I go to Rafael Hernandez School to assist second-year children in doing their homework every Monday. I used to think that spending time with kids could be tedious; however, I was embraced by friendly children as soon as I arrived at school. Their eyes bright with curiosity stared at my Volunteer Pass, and they tried to pronounce my name in different funny tones.

Overall, community service is paying back to people and animals that are in need. That is why it is necessary for the people that are able to participate do. Not only should people do it because they have to, they should want to. I have learned this personally through my community service experiences. Whether it be helping with school decorations, planting trees in the garden, or cleaning up garbage, doing service allows me to both aid my community and to know exactly how I am aiding it. It is for this reason that I enjoy community service. Often, I will sign up to help with small, individual community events. For example, a few weeks ago, I allocated six hours to help set up and operate various activities at the River Hill Community Health Fair. I am also a member of the American Red Cross, and frequently help blood donors at the Columbia Red Cross Blood Donor Center. Whether it be helping the community learn more about health, or helping facilitate blood donations to the needy, I know exactly how I help in community…

I have had the opportunity to volunteer for the last several weeks. I had never really volunteered before, so I knew that this was my opportunity to do some community service to help others. I have found through the experience that I really like to volunteer, so in the near future I will probably volunteer on my own, rather than doing it for a class. Doing service projects is a great way to get involved with the community. There are always people and businesses looking for help, and it is usually easy to find a way to help. When I had to do volunteer services for psychology, I was excited because I had never really volunteered for a long period of time. It was very interesting, because it actually made me feel like a better person for helping someone in the community. I volunteered at the Manchester Church of the Brethren Preschool. I chose that place, because I am an education major, and I thought that it would help me be able to work with children. I love working with children every chance that I can. While I was volunteering/observing, I learned many things that involved psychology. Psychology obviously relates to human’s, so it was neat to put it into a different perspective, because I got to look at 4 and 5 year olds, to see how the subjects that we were recently discussing in class, pertained to them particularly. Children learn very quickly, at a young age so I had a great opportunity to see that first hand. It was neat to relate all of the things I learned in class, to the actual students I was observing.…

For my graduation project, I volunteered at Nancy Grayson elementary and worked with kindergarten teacher Mrs. Corman in her classroom. I was meant to work with her students, handle projects, and guide them when they faced problems. The purpose of this was to learn more about grade-school children (specifically kindergarten), and understand the most effective ways in which they acquired new information. My goal was to understand how they learned, what best motivated them, and how I could effectively help them apply what they learned.…

The proponents of mandatory community service for college students often claim that it is cut and dry on how the service would be carried out, however, the definition of community service does not corroborate their contention. Community Service is defined by the Oxford dictionary as “voluntary work intended to help people in a specific area”. In the definition it reads “in a specific area”, however, the…
