“African Americans Pioneers: We’ve come a long way”
Maya Angelou Public Charter Middle School Black History Month Essay Contest is open to all 6th through 18th grade students. Three winners will be selected: one 6th grader, one 7th grader, and one 8th grader. Students will be selected February 27th.
Grade 7 and 8
Have students write about whether they think there is still racism in the United States today. Ask them to give specific examples. Have them compare and contrast the types of racist acts or rhetoric and prejudices that continue today with those from before the civil rights movement. Give students the option of reflecting on any personal experiences with racism as they write. Students could talk about how they have felt when experiencing
