What has changed in the relationships between the lovers in Act 3 Scene 2?
At the Start of a Midsummer Night’s Dream the relationships between the lovers, Hermia, Helena, Lysander and Demetrius are very confusing. Hermia is being forced by her father, Egeus, to marry Demetrius which she doesn’t love but he loves her. Hermia loves Lysander and he loves her. Helena loves Demetrius In Act 3 scene 2 and nobody loves Helena. The relationships between the lovers change because Puck puts a love potion first, on Lysander’s eyes and then on Demetrius’s eyes so that the first person they saw when they woke up, they loved. So now both Demetrius and Lysander love Helena. Helena still loves Demetrius and, Hermia still loves Lysander. But now nobody loves Hermia.
Demetrius hates Helena at the start of the play. An example of this is: “for I am sick when I do look at thee”. This implies that Demetrius hates Helena because he is saying that he is calling her repulsive. Furthermore, Demetrius is bantering Helena and hopes that she would get offended and just leave him alone. On the other hand Demetrius loves Hermia at the start of the play. An Example is: “relent, sweet Hermia”. This suggests that Demetrius wants her to become less tense and just love him. In addition, when Demetrius calls Hermia sweet he means it as a compliment.
Meanwhile, Helena is desperately in love with Demetrius at the start of the play. An example of this is: “what worser place can I beg for your love; than to be used as you use your dog”. This shows that Helena is in love with Demetrius because she would rather be near him and be treated like a dog than having to keep begging him to love her. In addition, when she said that, she didn’t have any dignity. Besides that, Helena is best friends with Hermia at the start of the play. An example of this is: Hermia: “I frown upon him; yet he loves me still”. Helena: O that your frowns would teach my smiles such skills”. This
