Some people say love is a feeling, others believe that love is a choice. Many people discuss, challenge, and write about the definition of love. “A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream” demonstrates that perfect love does not exist.
Oberon and Titania’s marriage relationship enforces the theme because their marriage relationship centers itself around revenge and conflict. When one thinks of a marriage he imagines two people who love each other and sacrifice for one another. Oberon and Titania are the opposite. The first obstacle love faced was Demetrius love for Hermia. Demetrius loved Hermia, but she did not feel the same way. Hermia’s frustration with Demetrius shows when she says“[she] frowns upon him; yet he gives [her] love.” (1.1194) Demetrius’s love situation in the beginning is ironic to his love situation in the ending. In the beginning, he wanted to force Hermia into loving him, coincidentally at the end a spell forced Demetrius to love Helena. Another obstacle love faced was the women were consistent in their feelings, but the men changed whom they loved. The love roles reversed. Instead of the two men loving Hermia, both men loved Helena. All the women wanted was one man to love each of them, but this was not the case until the end. The shallowness of Lysander and Hermia’s relationship is displayed because Hermia believes Lysander left her only because Helena’s “height, forsooth, she hath prevail’d with him.” (3.2.293) This shows Lysander and Hermia’s relationship is not deep emotionally, but rooted solely in physical elements.
