At times, when one tries to solve a problem, they might end up making the situation worse. An example of a character showing this is portrayed in the play 'A Midsummer night's Dream' by author, William Shakespeare. The character in the play is the fairy king, named Oberon who is proven to commit evil acts. Oberon creates a lot of chaos in the play and is known to be the reason behind all problems.
Many people are known to be tricksters just to get their way. Oberon and his wife, Titania do not have a healthy relationship which causes Oberon to behave badly. This is proven when Oberon suggest, "Having once this juice, I'll watch Titania, when she is asleep, and drop the liquor of it in her eyes. The next thing she, waking, looks upon, be it on lion, bear, or wolf, or bull, on a meddling monkey, or on a busy ape, she shall pursue it, with the soul of love”(II.II.180-186). Oberon plays a trick on his wife, and gets her to fall in love with the first creature she sees which turns out to be a donkey. Thus, this shows how tricky and mischievous Oberon is and how him acting evil creates havoc towards his relationship and as well as the play. Oberon also gets others to …show more content…
do his work for him.
People nowadays are known to use others to get their work done. Oberon runs away from his own work and get Puck to do his dirty work. This is portrayed in the play when Oberon interferes in a relationship between a girl named Helena who madly loves a boy, named Demetrius, but he does not love her in return. Oberon sees this and takes the matter into his own hands. However, instead of Oberon doing the job himself, he makes Puck do it for him. This is shown when Oberon states, "A sweet Athenian lady is in love with a disdainful youth. Anoint his eyes, but do it when the next thing he espies may be the lady. Thou shalt know the man, by the Athenian garment he hath on"(II.I.165-169). Oberon not being very clear towards Puck and being too lazy to do the work himself gets Puck to do the task which ends up making the problem worse and more complicated. Therefore, Oberon shows that he makes Puck do all his evil tasks. Oberon is a problematic character also since he is controlling and sneaky. in order to get something, people might manipulate others into doing what they want.
Oberon is known to be very manipulative in the play towards his wife Titania. The reason of tricking his wife was to just get hold of the Indian boy that Titania brought along home with her. Oberon mentions it when he argues," Why should Titania cross her Oberon? I do but beg a little changeling boy, to be my henchman"(II.I.120-122). He wanted the Indian boy to work for him and wanted to take care of the boy in order to teach him to become a man. Hence, this lead Oberon to trick his wife into handing the boy over to him and shows how deceiving and manipulative he is. All these reasons claim that Oberon ruins everything for the characters in the
play.
To summarize, Oberon is one of the most evil characters in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Throughout the play, Oberon plays mind games and is the root behind most of the bad situations and problems in the play. He shows this when he tricks his wife, gets others to complete his tasks for him, and he deceives and manipulates Titania. It is not always the best idea to poke your nose into others problems and one should not be untruthful in a relationship of theirs because it will always lead to chaos and destruction of those relationships.
