Important Vocabulary
Eugenics- the efforts to improve the race through selective breeding especially negative means
Culture- changing collection of norms, language, artifacts etc of a group of people
Macro culture- overarching cultural aspects of a society
Micro culture- subgroups having distinguishing characteristic within a society
Race – socially constructed categories of people based on physical features or ancestral origin
Ableism- system of devaluation of people who differ from the norm of able bodied people
Heterosexism- the system of privilege assigned to people who identify as heterosexual.
Systemic Bias- implicit bias towards a group of people that is evidenced at multiple levels of various social systems and institutions
Secular Humanism- respect for humans rather than a belief in the supernatural
Ethnic studies- courses which present info from a perspective of a particular racial or ethnic group
Cultural Dissonance- mismatch that occurs between 2 people’s cultural frames
Universal Design- movement toward making things including education accessible to more people
Sex- biologically determined
Gender- culturally determined.
