Meriwether Lewis and William Clark paved the way of the west for the present day American citizens. They traveled over 8,000 miles across the country by sailing, walking, canoeing and riding horses. Lewis was in charge of documenting all of the new plants and animals they came across. Clark took the responsibility for composing the maps of the rivers and the land in the west. Together, and with the help of their fellow members of the Corp of Discovery, they made one of the most memorized expeditions to this day.…
The political and religious havoc in England in the 1620s led to the Great Migration. Governor John Winthrop led as many as 900 or 1000 Puritans over to Massachusetts Bay to practice Christianity in 1630. On the 17th of September, the city of Boston was founded. The existing New England Company was then changed to the Massachusetts Bay Company. However, right after moving to America, nearly 200 died the first year and almost the same amount returned to England the year afterwards. In the next decade though, better living conditions allowed more than 20,000 English Puritans to immigrate over to Boston.…

The Novel, Disintegration by Eugene Robinson, the author begins by presenting a compelling argument that the black America as we once knew it, has shifted from one to four. Robinson divides black American into four groups: the mainstream middle class, the abandoned minority with less hope and access to resources, the transcendent elite with wealth and power and the emergent group. Robinson poses a question that many have asked: “how is a teenager living in abandoned dysfunction today supposed to escape?” Many are wondering the answer because not only do they lack insufficient resources like education, money and familial support, there is a probability that they are the products of single parent homes; however, they lack governmental and public support which leads to a positive correlation between increased crime and increased incarcerations. He concludes that Abandoned, isolated from the Mainstream, has developed a…
George Washington once said, “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports” (Washington). This faith in G-d, exemplified in My Antonia, was never so prevalent as it was in our early communities. Spread across farms and villages throughout this great country, religion has lifted up the spirits of millions, rejuvenating vast swaths of the population. As our nation expanded during its early years, this hope and belief was crucial to pioneers who travelled into unknown western lands. In My Antonia, faith and freedom of religion is shown as an essential aspect of frontier life. Belief in G-d and freedom of religion built the foundation of this nation, and Willa Cather…

During the time period of the twentieth century in Europe and the Middle East there were significant changes occurring in major forced migration movements such as Muslims during the Balkan Wars and many Jews during World War II. ‘Superpower’s’ (or successful dominant European countries) citizens never migrating away from their homeland remained constant.…
The Huichol Indians live in the Sierra Madre Mountains of central Mexico. Every year they go on their pilgrimages led by their guide, a shaman named Pancho. They believe if they don’t go on their pilgrimages, the world will end and that is their responsibility. Part of this pilgrimage is living in the past. If they are living in the future, time will stop. This is how their space and time is viewed. They said that Gods don’t worry about space and time. Everyone will be safe with time. They have to pay attention to time and make sure everything is done right or else the Gods will be disappointed. Keeping open hearts and being the center of their sacred land. The original pilgrimage was the ancestors, where they walk in a group led by the shaman with many of their offerings. Once they walk deep into the valley as a religious experience, they look for peyote and gather it for the coming year. They take this hallucinogen to become Gods themselves and the shamans help with understanding the vision. This is a very spiritual quest for them. Along with finding the peyote they bring offerings which are very personal to them. The men give spears and women give bowls. The personal objects they bring with them in hopes to bring them wealth are crosses with coins on them. They confess their sins by tying knots in a string and then throwing them into the fire. This is more of a communal thing for them as they are all in a circle versus confessing their sins in a confession booth where it is you and the…
The term exodus is an emotive one. It conjures striking biblical imagery of the Israelites fleeing their ancestral lands in search of religious freedom and a distinct identity. In many ways this mirrors the plight of the African Americans in the latter half of the 19th century as well as the early 20th century, as they left the south for the north in search of opportunity and sovereignty. Arnesen’s book Black Protest and the Great Migration attempts to dissect this geographic movement of people by discussing its role in the creation of a national black identity, increased black presence in the workforce, and the formation of African-American political organizations all in the context of the first World War.…
My cultural background has also been greatly influenced by my religion and my family’s involvement with religion and God. Worship is a very important part of my family’s culture and it has always been stressed, in my home and the home of my relatives and close friends, that valuing God above all else will make us blessed and keep us safe. Worship is not something that I view as a chore, but rather a defining factor in my family’s life that brings us together and helps keep us close in our faith and love. Our religious affiliation goes back as far as our family line can be traced and the traditions that come with our faith related holidays and events are very special to me.…
Most Mexicans are Roman Catholic, and a smaller amount is Protestant. For many Mexican Americans, the Catholic Church plays an instrumental role in keeping families close and preserving Mexican culture. It’s also a great tool in maintaining the strength of local Mexican American communities. When unauthorized Mexican immigrants arrive in America, they are met with an unfamiliar culture and environment. However, one place they can seek solace from this new and scary situation is at church. By attending Mass and participating in church services and community, unauthorized immigrants can feel a sense of “home” and comfort. (Flores & Carey,…
At a time when both natives and Spanish foreigners experienced an extreme culture shock of clashing beliefs, Guadalupe created a religious common ground for them to share. The term “American Gospel” used by Elizondo to describe the event is drawn from the combination of the Christian gospel and the traditions rooted in the native land that are represented in the Guadalupe event. The Spanish came with the motive of converting everyone to their faith. This Spanish influence is apparent in the manner that Guadalupe identifies herself as “the Ever-Virgin Holy Mary” when speaking to Juan Diego. She also instructs Juan Diego to tell the bishop to build her a shrine on the hill of Tepeyac. Asking to establish a Catholic place of devotion at a site where the Aztecs once worshipped their gods contributed to the religious coalescence. In this sense Catholic practices were emphasized while native inspiration was incorporated to display the…

The Great Migration was a period in history when there was a massive relocation of blacks from the South to the North. These people were driven from their homes due to the lack of work available and poor treatment. They headed north and first filled the positions of those who had gone to fight in the World War, filling mainly industrial jobs, many of them in the steel industry. Migrants headed for cities like New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and St. Louis to find better opportunities for themselves and their families.…
