Mike Rose I Just Wanna Be Average Analysis
Mike Rose “I Just Wanna Be Average” argues that society very often ignore and doesn’t see the full value and possible of students. In my opinion, Mike Rose was trying to voice the frustration felt by students in, “I Just Wanna Be Average”
Mike Rose explains his own experience of accidently being placed in a "vocational program" during high school. He wasn't willing to fight to get out of the program, instead he remained patient and worked hard in silence. He compare's different teachers to show their ability to motivate struggling student's and how they couldn’t care less. "But mostly the teachers had no idea how to engage the imagination of us kids who were scuttling along at the bottom of the pound."

    I did not pick up on this at the time but Mike Rose tells the elongated version of his childhood to show how an underprivileged child born to immigrant parents can easily struggle and be written off as a result. Mike Rose's parents were immigrants from Italy. Throughout Mike Rose's childhood they struggled financially and did not have the opportunity to get involved with his education, through no fault of their own. Mike Rose's interest in reading dissipated throughout his early teen years as a result of him being sent to the vocational track. He was surrounded by peers and teachers whose expectations of him were substandard. One day in vocational track the religion teacher brought up the topic of talents, achievement, and hard work. A student named Ken Harvey was asked to give his opinion on the matter and his response was one that has stuck with Mike Rose all these years: “I just wanna be average” (28).     In the story, "I Just Wanna Be Average" the main character, Mike Rose, takes us through his years at Mercy High School during the 1960's and 1970s.     In order to understand Mike Rose, and his book Lives on the Boundary, you must first understand where Mike is coming from and examine his past. Mike was born to a first generation immigrant family, originally from Italy. He spent his early childhood in the mid-west and then in his latter childhood, parents not knowing any better, in East Los Angeles. Mike's father suffered from arteriosclerosis. Neither Mike's mother nor his father had completed high school and no one in his family had ever attended college.
