    1. The setting for the short novel, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, is in the state of Mississippi, in the early 1930’s, which means that it is right during the middle of the Great Depression. I believe the setting is very important to the book because in Mississippi during those times there was a lot of racism and racial segregation, the African Americans people could not do the same things that Caucasian, white people could do. Also the setting is important because if they author had put the book set in a place like New York City the racism would not be the same as if she set the book in a place like Mississippi or really anywhere in the South. In addition the setting is important because if it had been set in the…

Student paper (p. 3): The Awakening is about the story of a young wife who is awakened to her sexual needs that cannot be fulfilled within the confines of her conventional marriage (Clark, 2008). Nevertheless, Edna Pontellier is awakened to a yearning for freedom, a relation to and understanding of herself that she has not been aware of missing in the past. In the text, Edna identifies with the masculine interest of her father who the narrator remarks had managed or coerced his wife into her early grave. However, when Edna is awakened to the hidden potentialities she possesses, it is the yearning for freedom and the desire to overcome the limitations imposed on her from outside that determine her actions.…

Ida B. Wells is well known for her influence during the civil rights and women’s rights movements. She was born in 1862 in Holly Springs Mississippi. Her parents died of yellow fever when she was only sixteen years old. She was to be split up from her other six siblings, but she dropped out of school and managed to get a job as a teacher and was able to keep her family together. She soon realized the discrimination in pay that there was as she was taking home thirty dollars compared to someone else’s eighty dollars a month. Then in 1884, she was confronted by a railroad conductor, asking her to move to the overly crowded smoking car. She refused and was drug off the train. She hired an attorney and tried to sue the railroad. Her attorney was bought off, and she had to hire a white attorney who eventually was able to get her a $500 settlement. However, the Supreme Court later overturned the decision, claiming “her intent was to harass, and was not in good faith to find a comfortable seat”. She gained recognition in the public for her writings about her experience and soon got an editorial job for a paper. She eventually became co-owner of the Free Speech Newspaper in Memphis where she became even more known for her investigative journalism on the lynchings of black men in the South. (Wikipedia.org)…

Harriet Beecher Stowe was born in Connecticut in 1811 as the daughter of Reverend Lyman Beecher who was active in the anti-slavery movement. She wrote articles for the newspaper as means to support her family. Harriet saw the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 (allowed escaped slaves to be re-enslaved) to be immoral. She was especially upset about how slavery split families apart and she sympathized with slave mothers who lost their children in slavery, because she had lost half of her children. Harriet published Uncle Tom’s Cabin in increments in an anti-slavery paper. Later it was published as a complete volume. This book depicted the life of a slave named Tom who was beaten to death by his cruel master. She wrote this book to show people the reality of slavery and how horrible it was. This book gained anti-slavery sympathy in the North and angered slave owners in the South. President Lincoln referred to her as, “the little women who wrote the book that made this great war” (Kennedy, p. 276).…

Along with being an icon of the Black Panther Movement, Davis worked with the Women’s Liberation Movement through her writing. One of her most notable works, Women, Race, and Class, is a study that emphasized the concept of intersectionality in the movement. The book also called for African American women to join in the Women’s Liberation Movement and fight against misogynoir and internalized racism in the black community. Not only was Davis a poised leader that fought against misogyny, but she was one of the few women of color that translated the message of feminism through an African American perspective. I admire her for her passion and determination to end gender inequality despite backlash from her own community. She did not let criticism stop her from reaching her…
