I learned a lot from Darcy, Sarah, and Miranda's miscue analysis. I really like how the teacher just didn't bring up the student's weaknesses but also her strengths. That can really boost a student's self confident level if they are struggling with a subject. From this section I hope to remember that the quantity of easy and interesting reading that the student's pick will help them become successful readers. By having the student's self select their own reading material will help them make meaning out of the text. Another thing I hope to remember from this section is that students who overuse phonics need to come up with another word when struggling that sounds like a real word that makes sense. Students can also say "blank" when struggling…
1. Carlson classifies modern insecticides into two groups of chemicals. The first group, represented by DDT, is known as the “chlorinated hydrocarbons” and the other group, represented by Malathion and parathion, consists of the organic phosphorus insecticides. Although both are organic, the organic phosphorous insecticides are more poisonous than the chlorinated hydrocarbons and have the ability to destroy enzymes.…
Mildred Montag: She is the wife of Guy. They don't really love each other. She is materialistic and she doesn't like books. She is also a coward.…
Mildred is self-centered because she only thinks about her and what she want to do. Mildred had forgot to tell Montag that Clarrise is dead.It took four days for montag to find out. She said,” I’ve meant to talk to you about her.’’ She sounds mean when she tells him. It’s like she selfish because people can do whatever they want to because it’s fun.…
Hanna Schmitz’s illiteracy played a pivotal role throughout the novel. Moreover, this is most notable during Schmitz’s war trial. This became a very repetitious act for this character throughout the novel. The literature suggests that the biggest life decision the former Auschwitz guard made through illiteracy, was the decision of the prison sentence. Schmitz found that it was easier to settle for a life sentence, than to come clean about the issues regarding her illiteracy. "So you're saying that the arresting judge misinterpreted the fact that the defendant ignored all letters and summonses, and did not present herself either to the police, the prosecutor, or the judge?" (Schlink 98) The biggest struggle that Schmitz faced was keeping her…
“What is a life worth? And what is a life worth living?” are two central focuses that have caused controversy within the medical community. This powerful novel, “First, Do No Harm” by Lisa Belkin, addresses these disputable questions as it places a significant emphasis on the ethical dilemmas in healthcare. By presenting the stories of Patrick, a fatally ill fifteen year old; Jake and Taylor, babies born prematurely; Armando, a quadriplegic; and Landon, Belkin allows readers to catch a glimpse of the procedures hospitals unfortunately face on a daily basis. These real-life dramatizations take place from May to October, 1988 in the Hermann Hospital Medical Center, a major metropolitan hospital in Texas. The novel not only accents the hardships…
“Don't give up for your rights, stand up for your rights,”Bob Marley. In Among the Hidden, by Margaret Peterson, standing up for rights was demonstrated by one of the main characters, Jen Talbot. Twelve-year-old Jen, who lived in a wealthy family, was illegal for being a third child. If she got caught by the population police, she would be sentenced to death immediately. Throughout the story, Jen tried to solve the problem of 3rd children not being allowed, in order to experience freedom and be considered human. She accomplished her plan of protesting in front of the president by being sly, intelligent, and courageous.…
The dictionary definition of ignorance is a lack of knowledge or information, but a more relatable defining of the word is to disregard what is obvious to one’s own or another’s detriment. Ignorance was such a common trait among people during the time period from 1865 to the early 1900s, that it popped up not only in the literature, but also in historical events. A majority of individuals from history did not see their follies until the consequences of their naivety was upon them; such as, those moving out west failed to realize the lack of trees for lumber would negatively affect their ability to build homes and towns. Many living through the Civil War in the South were unaware of the fact…
In my opinion, Texas decided to leave the American Union because its fear of isolation from majority of the union, particularly the north. Also, escalation of fear and paranoia already took Texas by storm due to talk of the abolition of slavery. Lincoln won the presidential election of 1861 and the Republicans took control of the executive branch. With the Republicans now “strong enough in numbers”, Texas feared their rights would be taken for granted and the union would only fulfill the northern states wishes. Texas doubt was not without reason as Lincoln argued that all territories should be free and not allow slavery.…
Times are changing different cultures; they come and go but are going back to their old cultures. Since the beginning of time humans always have a key feature in their nature that help them evolve, become smatter, and acquire their rights; also, one of the biggest features that is changing throughout time is will. Will is the desire or drive to do something, so a strong willed person is someone with a powerful will. Through time, humans of all races and cultures have used will in a good way. For example, when Martin Luther King was locked in jail after protesting for the treatment of blacks, he still kept his will strong, even after everything he had gone through. When will is used in a good way, it can have a huge impact…
Appearance is everything, the way someone looks, talks, and acts all make up who they are as a person. When someone does something the way they are seen often affects the outcome and consequences of their actions. This is seen very often in both Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin. The main characters in both of these novels do awful things but their physical appearance, mindset, and whether they are a good or a bad person affects the way they are treated. The way society sees a person's overall appearance too often changes the way their actions are seen and dealt with and how they are treated as well.…
“Now that you have started reading this essay, you and I are now connected by a web of connections.” This is what Susan Griffin, author of “Our Secret”, a chapter taken from Griffin’s insightful book A Chorus of Stones, most likely would have declared. Griffin argues that, “all of us, especially all of us who read her essay - are part of a complex web of connections” (265). But how are people who do not even know each other connected? Griffin implies that people are part of a “larger matrix” and have a “common past” (265). The “common past” between people that Griffin asserts can be proved by examining the unique underlying comparisons and analogies she applies in the chapter. “Our Secret” is a collection of Griffin’s own life story and the life stories of others, including Heinrich Himmler, Heinz, a painter, a friend, Holocaust survivors, a homosexual man, and her sister. She even uses RNA and cells as analogies to indicate how even the materials that compose people have similar functions to people themselves. Although people may question how…
The word “knowledge” was recurring many times throughout Frankenstein novel and attracted or forced the reader to find out the true definition of it. Curiously, I decided to look up the definition of knowledge from the Webster 's Dictionary. It defines, “Knowledge: n. Understanding gained by actual experience; range of information; clear perception of truth; something learned and kept in the mind.” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary) I realized this word is very straightforward, but has many useful and different meanings to all of us. It is also powerful tool to determine and control the result of our judgment. “Knowledge consists in recognizing the difference between good and bad decisions”. (Knowledge Intellectual understanding) This statement seems to be one of the simple answers to the question of ‘what is knowledge?’…
Anscombe rejected many forms of ethical conceptions and embedded her own thoughts based of past philosophers. For this reason, Anscombe considered many aspects of ethics including, virtue, psychology, intention, desire and action (Driver). Based of Anscombe, ethics is based on the idea of virtue but because of her Catholic background, Anscombe based ethics of divine law. Anscombe believed that, “only suitable and really viable alternative is the religiously based moral theory” (Driver). Additionally, Anscombe constructed her ethics on the study of psychology specifically moral psychology. According to Anscombe, people should “avoid using the language of moral obligation” without a “divine legislator” (Kennedy). For Anscombe, for people to fail ethically is to go against a specific divine positive law. Identically, Anscombe thought that religiously based moral theory retains the concept of human obligation. (Driver). For this reason, according to Anscombe for a person to fail ethically, they must sin and go against a divine power. Anscombe implied, that without a “divine legislator” arguments about ethics could only “appeal to personal or societal dispositions” (Kennedy). Anscombe also introduced the idea of…
Not knowing things is sometimes an award, but it can also be a curse. The same idea is applied to the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury where the government often hides the truth from the people. They do this to keep everyone happy since they think if you do not know about something, you do not have to worry about it. Some people can accept this standard of living, but others feel as if they are missing something like the main character Guy Montag felt as he learned more about books. Montag developed throughout the story to overcome the statement Ignorance is Bliss by the help of many characters but mainly Beatty, Clarisse, and Faber.…
