How Being a Military Brat Has Shaped Me As a child, my parents tried to shield me as much as they could. Like every sound parent, mine wanted me to maintain a young and innocent mindset for as long as possible. However, when it would come time for my dad to be deployed time and time again, my mother and father had no choice but to explain why he was leaving. Knowing my father willingly would leave his family behind to defend our freedom made me recognize there must be bad in the world. I realized the dangers my father faced every time he left home wearing his uniform. Moreover, I truly realized that by him putting himself in harms way, my mom, sister, and myself did not have to fear danger invading our homeland. My father’s participation in the Air Force registered in me the concept of freedom and how privileged us as Americans truly are. I developed a strong sense of pride and love in my country and the men and women who serve and defend it. Indeed, I suspect that without being brought up in a military home, I would not have as strong a sense of freedom that my surroundings have provided me with.
