A corporal often serves as the fire team leader. Equipped with the M16A4 service rifle, an M203 grenade launcher, and an M7 bayonet, the fire team leader:


Is responsible for the safety of his Marines and their performance



Controls the movement and fires of the Marines within the fire team



Marks a target and directs the fire team’s fire on the target



Maintains communication with the squad leader

The senior fire team leader assumes the duties of the squad leader in the event of a casualty. Automatic Rifleman
Equipped with the M249 squad automatic weapon (SAW) and the combat knife (k­bar), the SAW gunner:


Carries out the team leader’s orders by focusing firepower on enemy­troop concentrations of four or more



Maintains a consistent high rate of fire



Assumes the duties of the fire team leader in the event of a casualty

Assistant Automatic Rifleman
Equipped with the M16A4 service rifle and M7 bayonet, the assistant automatic rifleman: ●

Carries out the team leader’s orders by firing on the target



Serves as a squad scout



Assists the SAW gunner by carrying extra ammunition and a spare barrel for the M249



Prepares to assume the duties of the automatic rifleman

Serves as a squad scout
