Like Water for Chocolate is Laura Esquivel’s original romantic love story and is often dubbed as the “Mexican Romeo and Juliet.” In just 246 pages, Esquivel created a breathtaking work of art, strategically incorporating love, desire, nurture, and feminism. Like Water for Chocolate is famously known for its magical realism. Esquivel uses magical realism to justify the perception of the novel and to make extraordinary concepts seem normal. It is basically the glue that holds the book together. The novel’s magical realism, helps define lust by incorporating the element of fire and imagery. By adding magical elements into the day-to-day life, readers can critically analyze the characters in order to understand their thoughts and actions.…

A reader can gain a deeper understanding into Cameron’s choice to escape the hospital in Going Bovine by applying Libba Bray’s life. When pondering if he should leave the hospital, Cameron says “How long till the pain medication? I could count the minutes. Go to sleep and not wake up. I could stay here and wait for the inevitable. Saving the world. That’s impossible. Insane. Still. A cure. I could be cured. That’s what she [Dulcie] said. And some little atoms come awake inside me, swirling into a question I can’t shake: “Why the hell not?” I could have a chance. And a chance is better than nothing”(Bray 123). In an interview done with Libba Bray, when asked about the car accident that she was in that broke almost everything on her face especially her eye, she states…
I agree with your analysis of what is considered deviant behavior. However, until a deviant act is committed, in this case by the guidelines of the community, homosexuality. There would not be enactment of laws to prevent future deviances. Therefore, deviant acts are important as they allow communities to safeguard their beliefs and prevent future deviances.…

Deviance is the social concept that behaviors which violate the norms are wrong, or shameful in some way. The movie Cruel Intentions is full of social concepts like role, deviance, class conflict, and gender theories. I have chosen to write about deviance because it seemed to be the overwhelming cause behind all the other social themes that occurred. Deviance is shown throughout the movie in many forms and based on perceptions of varying degree.…
Brokeback Mountain accurately describes the attitudes of society towards homosexuals in the 1960’s, specifically of those that live where the story took place. In the 1960’s, police raids of gay bars were routine, and extremely violent. The stigma associated with even the idea of being homosexual was crippling. It was considered a disease, and looked down upon severely. But finally, the gay rights movement was gaining its footing. During this time, influenced by the model of a militant black civil rights movement, the “homophile movement,” as the participants dubbed it, became more visible. Activists, such as Franklin Kameny and Barbara Gittings, picketed government agencies in Washington to protest discriminatory employment policies. But the south, the setting of Brokeback Mountain, was very different. Although these were great steps towards equality, many states in the south and west were very far behind. The treatments of gays shown in the story were painfully accurate. At one point, when Ennis and Jack reunite after four years, they fear what would happen if they got caught. Ennis tells Jack the story from his childhood, saying:…

This student’s analysis does a great job of analyzing the piece of poetry as a whole while at the same time taking time to discuss specific details. When first reading the poem, I did not know who Dan White, or Harvey Milk were, and the student’s analysis helped myself understand their importance affect on the LGBTQ+ community. It is important to identify the speakers own queer identity, as this helps highlight the shift in the poems sarcasm and serious tone. These shifts occur specifically when he uses figurative language, especially at the word play. The student does well to identify this word play throughout the poem. The sarcastic word play is used as an understatement to emphasize and be an example of the dismissal of the acts that have occurred. These acts are outrageous and awful, however, they’re affect on the LGBTQ+ community is overlooked and ignored. These examples of understatements can be found in lines 1 and 25. The synecdoche used to describe the people and couples as “levis and leather jackets” is meant to describe the LGBT+…
