Miller Motivational Interviewing Techniques
In the Motivational Interviewing video and transcript it is apparent that the counselor was able to use a lot of motivational interviewing techniques. The motivational interviewing techniques included: open-ended questions, summaries, change talk, complex reflection, and simple reflection. Miller in the video and transcript was able to display effective ways to use motivational interviewing techniques with the client Mike. Miller was using open-ended questions when working with the client Mike.20:34 Miller mentioned, so fill me in a little bit. What, what is it that brings you here today? 20:39 the client Mike responded well, actually, I’m doing a favor for a friend of mine. At 20:42 the client stated, and he told me about the study you guys are doing, so, ah, I figured I'd, have to participate in it. And ah, you told me you're a basically an addiction counselor and ah, he thought I might be an interesting subject. The open-ended question allows for Miller to gather more information about the client Mike’s reasoning for seeking services.
Miller throughout the individual counseling session used simple reflection. A simple reflection allows for the counselor to gain understanding and empathy for the client’s situation by rephrasing the client’s statements. 21:34
