The term “Dialectic” means “the art or practice of arriving at the truth by using conversation involving question and answer.” Think of your dialectical journal as a series of conversations with the texts we read during this course. The process is meant to help you develop a better understanding of the texts we read. Use your journal to incorporate your personal responses to the texts, your ideas about the themes we cover and our class discussions. You will find that it is a useful way to process what you’re reading, prepare yourself for group discussion, and gather textual evidence for your Literary Analysis assignments.…

Maus is a novel, written by Art Spiegelman that depicts the life of his father, Vladek, a survivor of the Holocaust, and the struggles he went through to make it home to his wife, Anja. Vladek’s story is a detailed account of his journey from Poland to Auschwitz camp in Germany. However, not only does Spiegelman’s novel tell of Vladek’s life, but it also tells of his own, and his internal struggle with guilt, and regret for turning his father’s somewhat heroic account into a paycheck.…

Lamm discusses the issues in our healthcare. We are starting to see a “brave new world of healthcare”, one where we need to set new standards and obligations. “We shall have to balance quality of life with quantity of life, costs and benefits, preventive medicine versus curative medicine”. Lamm believes that there are two major flaws in our healthcare system one being that 35-37 million of our Americans are uninsured and an equal number are underinsured and second being the high cost of healthcare. He strongly encourages making healthcare more accessible. He repeats over and over how the largest flaw is our lack of access. The problem with having everyone able to access healthcare is that the costs would increase. We want everyone to have healthcare, but we are not willing to pay for it. He also discusses how we must now look at the needs of the entire population. We need to limit the use of certain resources of one individual in order to have enough for the whole population.…

In the novel Maus, by Art Spiegelman, it ends without resolving all the tensions it had set up over the course of the entire novel. Art sits with his father, who has just finished telling Art about his reunion with Anja after they both survived Auschwitz. Art stops his tape recorder, and Vladek turns to bed, addressing Art by his dead brother’s name, Richieu. Does this “accident” mean that Art will never live up to Richieu, never equal Richieu in his father’s affections? Or does it mean that Vladek has finally accepted Art by letting him share his brother’s place? Art then finds out from Vladek that he had burned his mother’s diary’s and had never told Art the truth about his mother’s diaries. This infuriates Art, and he calls him murderer, for the crime that Vladek had done. This was a twisting ending, and I was left wondering at the end, what exactly Art meant, by calling his father a murderer, for simply burning Anja’s diaries. I believe that this was an appropriate ending, because I truly believe that not all stories must end happily. We are so used to the initial “happy ending,” when in reality, many situations never end happily. Stories don’t always end with complete understanding either. And in this case, Art wanted to leave us without a complete understanding, because he wanted us to think about what he truly meant by ending the book that way. I also like the fact that this ending was different from other books. It left you hanging, but at the same time, it drew you in more to the book. Of course we wanted to know more, but Art decided that he could no longer give us more information about his father’s journey in surviving the Holocaust, because once he found out what Vladek had done to his mother’s diaries, he was too upset at his father to learn more about his story.…

Maus, by Art Spiegelman, shows the trials and tribulations that the main character, Vladek, and his companions suffered during the Holocaust. No matter the situation, Vladek rises up to the challenge, and does the only thing he can do: live. For the Jewish people during that time surviving was a challenge and for those that actually survived was pure luck. Throughout Maus we find this survival in the portrayal of Vladek Spiegelman; father of the author. Vladek resourcefulness helps him survive because of his knowledge of different languages, skills to work on anything, and initiative to make trades with others allows him to survive the years that he was trap in the Holocaust.…

    Medusa

In medusa, Duffy uses the character of a female to show power. "Be terrfied". This quote is a short sentence which emphasises her power and that when she looks at you, it doesnt take long till you are turned into stone. The sentence also creates a sinister tone in a way that she wants you t be afraid of her because she was once destroyed now she wants to destroy others as she has the power to do so. Duffy later on uses the verb "shattered" which links with the word "spattered". This demonstartes the strength of her power to destroy, her power is so strong that anything that comes in her way either ends up "shattered" or "spattered". The verbs also infer that with power comes jelousy because Medusa destroys everything that appears to be positive and beautiful. They might also suggest that the way she has destroyed inncocent life is a way to say that she is out of contro herself. The poem structured around her transformation, and the escalating scale of the living things she turns to "stone". She starts with a "buzzing-bee" and her victims increase in size until she changes a "dragon" into a "volcano". Finally she turns her attention to the man who broke her heart. In her last line Medusa says "look at me now". this line, given great structural emphasis, is hugely ambiguous. It could be a heart-felt plea for attention as well as, of course, a heavily ironic threat and reminder of her capabilities. The paradox for Medusa is that she has become trapped by her own power. Duffy may be suggesting that the negative and destructive qualities of revenge will eventually undo their perpetrator. In the same way power is a major theme in Ozymandias, what was once so magnificent - a symbol of the king's great power - is now "sunk... shattered...…

The Milgram (1963) article is about an experiment that was conducted on the Yale University campus on obedience. A newspaper ad and mailers were sent out to advertise for participants for an experiment that offered 4.50 just to show up and brought in 40 participants ranging in age, education level and occupation. The participants were told that the study had to do with memory and that one participant would be the learner and the other would be the teacher. The teacher would be responsible for shocking the learner every time that learner got a wrong answer and that each time the learner was shocked, the voltage of that shock would have to increase with the highest level of shock being clearly labeled as dangerous on the fake -but very professional looking- shocking machine. The participants did not know that the learner was a trained person working with the experimenter. Although a low amount of people were predicted to obey the experimenter in giving the more painful shocks, most participants did and over half of them administered shocks all the way up to the highest one.…
