M4 Assignment
The other day, I had received a call from the mother of my children. Usually, we
don’t have very good phone conversations. It’s pretty rare if we do. But I had this paper to
write so I figured I would try a bit of mindfulness and see if it would help damper the
situation and turn this talk into a good one. And with some mindfulness it turned out to be
just that. When made to face the one I usually don’t get along with, then I tend to be less
in the picture or mind frame because the things that come in this territory come with
hostility, so of course being mindful isn’t (and in this case still wasn’t) going to be easy.
But I knew if I tried and it worked then I could create a pattern of better talks. How hard
was it to be mindful? Well, it is usually difficult when we talk, but
this time it wasn’t that hard because she wanted to talk about the kids and how they are
doing in and out of school. It was nice to hear both of my children are doing very well so
far in school. Also the behavior at home is good too. The only time that other thoughts
intruded my mind was when she began to talk about herself or things that did not pertain
to the kids. The thoughts that popped up were of my future. And if I would do well in
school as I plan too. Also I thought of what I would do that evening, especially since
some of my favorite shows would be on that night and I was wondering if my roommates
would be home to join in on the shows and beer drinking (a great thing to do when you
have nowhere to go on a Tuesday night). But it was quite easy to get back on track once
she started to talk about the kids again. And what I had learned from all of this is that
sometimes, a little mindfulness can turn a situation (even one over the phone where your
missing body language and such) that is normally bad and make it not so bad. We had a
good conversation about the kids and how well they are doing, no arguments. And if this
is what has been brought to light, then I will continue to use this to further make my
future calls about the children more pleasant.

Mindfulness is argued to encompass two major components, namely attentional control, and a certain attitudinal adaptation towards one's experiences (Bishop, et al., 2004; Orsillo, Roemer, & Holowka, 2005). Attentional control involves objectively observing and being aware of moment-to-moment cognitive, affective and physical processes. Hence, it demands individuals to be able to focus their attention on present events and to be able to flexibly change their focus from one…

I think of habits of mind as a special thought process in which people use to make decisions, help decide what is right and wrong, and what is the better choice. As Greene and Lidinsky state it is, "patterns of thought that lead them to question assumptions, explore alternatives, anticipate opposing arguments, compare experiences, and identify the causes and consequences of ideas and events" (12). By this I believe they are saying that habits of mind are how the brain works to seek answers and come to conclusions. Habits of mind plays a large role in society because people encounter situations multiple times in a day and people constantly have to make decisions in order to come to a final conclusion. All the possible outcomes and alternatives have to be scanned and played out and habits of mind would be what to use.…

In the books titled Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, twelve different virtues are brought up and thoroughly described. In fact even a contemporary society could learn valuable lessons from any of the twelve virtues and apply them to present day to fix certain issues. For Aurelius loyalty to the principles of wisdom is the most important virtue. It is the fourth virtue he writes about and it may also be the most impactful virtue he discusses. Aurelius says “mankind are poor, transitory things; one day in life, and the next turned to ashes.” It is this idea and perspective that Aurelius tries to express throughout many of the other virtues he writes about in Meditations. Currently in the United States of America, there is a possibility that the federal government will shutdown. This issue could be resolved if lessons from Aurelius’ books were understood and applied to best solve the problem at hand.…

Chronic inflammation has been shown to be a consistent pre-cursor to many metabolic diseases, such as obesity, fatty liver disease, atherosclerosis, insulin resistance, type II diabetes, degenerative disorders such as dementia, airway disease and some cancers.1 The relationship between diet, and more specifically refined carbohydrates, and chronic inflammation has been of high interest in the media in recent years. This interest could have a lot to do with the alarming rate that these metabolic diseases are growing. For example, The World Health Organization estimates that one billion adults worldwide are over weight, and 300 million of those are clinically obese, defined as having a body mass index equal to or greater than 30 kg m-3. (1)…
