Patients that come to St. Jude are those that have been referred by a physician, have been diagnosed with a disease currently under study, and are eligible for a research protocol. In fact, no family ever pays St. Jude for anything. Transportation, housing and food are among the no-cost services provided so that the families that come to St. Jude can focus on their child. Reid describes this system, or nonsystem to be brutally simple to understand. This model is used in many poor developing nations including much of Africa, South Africa, South Asia and India. Since there is little or no government money to pay for health care and there is no health insurance, only the rich, the military and sometimes other government employees get medical care. As for everybody else, they stay sick or even perish. In most African countries the bulk of public spending on health care whether foreign or domestic is aimed almost entirely at the lethal epidemic of HIV-AIDS. This causes insufficient funds left over to pay for treatment of all other diseases and accidents. Thus people have to pay for treatment themselves. In countries where hundreds of millions of people live in rural areas, a simple necessity such as water can be difficult to encounter. If people cannot even accommodate for water it is almost non realistic to think that these people can pay for a medical bill. It is very normal for these people to go their whole lives without ever seeing a doctor or receiving any type of medical attention. Most of these nations use traditional approached used by their ancestors, such as a local healer who might use herbal or spiritual techniques to cure someone. Patients usually pay by other services instead of currency that can include whatever he or she has of values. This can include…

The number of reimbursed hospital care continues to grow along with the need to report uncompensated care and to separate difference between bad debit and charity care. The difficulty and confusion is whether or not these practices are in line and are they consistent with the amount of charity care and bad debt that health care organizations have and is it being classified in the right way. Certain treatment that is considered urgent and with some federal regulations, require that there be a "provision of service without consideration" and it looks the person’s ability to pay especially those with complex medical needs.…

    Charity Care and Bad Debt

    • 548 Words
    • 2 Pages

Charity care (also known as uncompensated care) is health care provided for free or at reduced prices to low income patients. The concept of charity care has been linked to the development of hospitals. Charity care includes all the costs and write-offs associated with services rendered to individuals determined prior to service delivery to be unable to pay. A hospital may write-off all or part of the cost of providing service to such a patient. A write-off results from removing items from the accounting books. The number of Charity care cases has dropped in recent years. Potential reasons for the decline include changes in physician practice patterns and increasing financial pressures. Many hospitals do not inform their patients that charity care is available to them. “Investigators also found non-profit hospitals charging poor, uninsured patients more than they did patients with health insurance” (Day, 2006). Over half of all government reimbursement for uncompensated care comes from the federal government; most of that is provided through Medicare and Medicaid. These federal funds are a primary source of support for health care providers that serve the uninsured. (Hoffman, 2007). Increasing demand for free and low-cost health care services by uninsured patients and Medicaid beneficiaries is, along with increased competition, placing a growing financial strain on safety-net health care providers.…

The health care world has a broad number of not-for-profit health care organizations. Not-for-profit health care organizations are “organizations that give a special designation because they provide goods or services that result in needed community benefits and are exempt from paying most taxes (Cleverley O James, 2011).” Not-for-profit health care organization is exempt from almost all taxes, because they are expected to provide free or low-cost care for those in need (Lydersen, 2012). This means that not-for-profit health care organizations will provide goods and services to communities in spite of a patients ability to pay, this is because not-for-profit health care organizations money stays within the communities being serviced, nothing leaves it. All monies that a…

Also, many insurance companies, agents, lawyers, and doctors, pharmaceutical companies, medical suppliers and even hospitals all compete for money in a cutthroat fashion. This jungle for the acquisition of money by playing with people’s lives is a terrible idea to dwell on. The U.S. is the only major industrialized nation in the world that does not provide health care for its citizens. Being a first world country, we produce groundbreaking technology in the medical field; yet ignore the needs of our indigent children. Therefore, if healthcare was free…
