The plain of Holderness did not exist before the Ice Age. It was once a wide bay backed by chalk cliffs running from Flamborough Head to Hessle, west of the city of Hull. Today Holderness is made up of glacial tills – sands and clays deposited by ice sheets during the Ice Age (Figure 4). The tills are soft and unstable and have little resistance to erosion. The low cliffs repeatedly slump down along rotational slip planes, lubricated by water which reduces friction and makes the sands and clays slip easily. The sea washes the slumped material away. This rapid coastal retreat will continue until the old buried cliff-line along the eastern edge of the Yorkshire Wolds is once again exposed. This is composed of much more resistant chalk rock, which will again form impressive white cliffs such as those north of Bridlington.…

Field Note: Humans are geographers by nature. They can think territorially or spatially and have an awareness of, and curiosity about the distinctive nature of places. Even children possess qualities of geographers, creating carefully mapped realms in tiny places. Places possess an emotional quality, and we all must belong somewhere. Humans' insatiable curiosity and the place-centered element within us gave birth to geography as an academic discipline. Conquest and commerce generated a need to know about the world and pragmatism was added long ago by traders and explorers. Geography literally means "to describe the Earth," and the practical aspects of geography first arose among the Greeks, Romans, Mesopotamians, and Phoenicians.…

    1) The first evidence Wegner was able to find was the remarkable number of close affinities of geologic features on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. He found the continental margins of the subequatorial portions of Africa and South America fit together with jigsaw-on-like precision. He also determined that the petrologic records on both sides of the Atlantic show many distributions- such as ancient coal deposits-that would be continuous if the ocean did not intervene.…

As geography courses are slowly replaced with broader history courses in modern day curriculums, the newer generations will become increasingly unaware of issues which affect them every day, such as climate change, terrorism, the economy, and international affairs. Also as a result of this, combined with new GPS technology, people all over the world are losing the ability to read maps. Maps, a crucial part of displaying data and the earth's constantly changing visual landscape, are now mostly used by foreign nations as part of war strategies, or ways to conduct terrorist attacks, rather than for their traditional purposes. Aside from the nation's dwindling understanding of the world around it, “Why Geography Matters” also discusses the history of our planet and how it has changed throughout billions of years.…
