Online purchasing for men has increased from 57% in 2008 to 77% in 2016 and the percentage of women buying online has increased from 49% in 2008 to 75% in 2015. This shows a clear increase of online purchasing for both genders. Over the years, internet shopping has become increasingly more attractive for men as many men do not want to physically go out to shop for clothing as it is predominately a female passion, so the introduction of online shopping has aided men to stay up to date with fashion from the comfort of their own homes. Customers are also becoming increasingly more aware of the ethical side of shopping, such as if those making the clothing are being treated well; because of this, many online companies such as ASOS are making sure that the consumer knows how their clothing is being…

Two dominant approaches that can be used when seeking to market to a broad range of consumers are segmentation and mass marketing. The traditional segmentation view of marketing suggests that market segments should be carefully researched for important differences, and then strategies developed to suit each specific segment. Mass marketing on the other hand favours marketing a product in the same way to all segments based on the assumption that many consumers’ preferences are often quite similar. Which approach is most suited to the marketing of fashion clothing? What are the drivers of purchasing behaviour associated with fashion clothing? Do these drivers differ across market segments or are they generally similar across segments? Market research can be conducted to provide answers to these questions based on evidence collected from consumers. This research project will seek to identify the determinants of fashion purchasing within Australia, with consideration to possible differences across market segments. Interviews will be conducted to explore the drivers of fashion purchase behaviour (first assignment) and then a survey will be used to quantitatively examine these drivers (second assignment).…

Urban Outfitters is a unique, creative and cutting-edge retail brand, with more than 130 stores operating across the United States, Canada and Europe. The label offers an eclectic mix of fashion forward, culturally inspired lifestyle merchandise in a variety of unconventional, creative and captivating retail environments, both in store and online, in order to provide a “lifestyle-specific shopping experience for educated, urban-minded individual in the 18 – 30 year old range” (URBN.com). This “upscale homeless” generation of affluent, experimental and inquisitive University students desires a brand that offers a range of authentic, on-trend products with the opportunity to engage in a customer experience that personifies their interest in popular culture, music and fashion (Gardner & Levy, 1955; Independent, 1998). Urban Outfitter’s objective is to provide a retail service that meets these distinct lifestyle aspirations (Bulmer & Oliver, 2004). To do this it uses three main strategy practices; a well-selected product range specific to the targeted consumer; an arousing retail environment; and an engaging integrated marketing communications approach. As their mission statement affirms, the intrinsic approach to this entire strategy is the constant endeavour to “understand our customers and connect with them on an emotional level” in order to determine customer behaviour (URBN.com; Bulmer and Oliver, 2004; Kimmel, 2010).…
