In the beginning of the novel, “A Single Shard”, Ajima is an old married woman to the potter Min. In the first few chapters, she is first regarded when Tree-ear spied on Min making pottery. Min’s wife occasionally scattered grain for the chickens or fetch water, but because she had nothing to do with Min’s work, Tree-ear perceived her as nothing but a background noise.
