the US team. The US team seems completely unprepared to face and beat the soviet team. Honestly, how could a bunch of college kids that can barely work together defeat the team that has dominated the hockey scene over the past 6 years. Especially when that same team beat the best professional players in the NHL earlier in the season. As Herb is able to unite the team around the common enemy of the soviet team, the players begin to show that they may possibly have a chance against the soviets. When the US team loses to the soviets on their own ice, that chance becomes slim, adding more tension to the final match in the movie against the two teams. The match is the main turning point in the conflict. The movie only glosses over the final match with Finland, despite the fact that this was the match that gave the US team the gold. This is all because the movie is based around the match with the soviets. After all, the match was called the “Miracle on Ice.” This was because the match gave America a sense of pride in a time where the US was facing many hardships from the past decad, and the USSR was practically winning the cold war.
