This is the Week 1 podcast for the course CMIS 1001: Introduction to Information Systems. The topic for this week is Information Systems and You.

This week, we introduce the topic of information systems (IS). You will learn how computer hardware and software, in conjunction with people and business processes, form a system to collect, store, analyze, and distribute information. You will learn how business applications perform routine operations, such as sales and payment processing, and how these operations support the decision-making process within an organization. This week, you will also investigate career possibilities within the field of IS. You will learn how to locate positions currently available in the field

Let’s outline the individual resources that you will need for this week.

This is a summary of Chapter 1 titled “Foundations of Information Systems in Business” from the course text: Introduction to Information Systems, written by O’Brien and Marakas and published by McGraw-Hill/Irwin.

The chapter consists of two sections: Section I: Foundation Concepts: Information Systems in
Business and Section II: Foundation Concepts: The Components of Information Systems.

Information systems play a pivotal role in today’s business environment. An information system is a set of five basic interacting components: hardware, software, network, data, and people. The major information systems activities involve input of data resources, processing of data into information, output of information product, storage of data, and control of system performance.
Different types of information systems exist for different purposes. The two major categories
