As we progress into the future and learning more about various issues, it is fair to say that societal issues are always more complex than what meets the eyes, which is the same for feminism. The Sangtin Writers describe the journey of SKMS and how the organization’s focus has shifted from solely focusing on women’s problem to the community as a whole, especially the people who are marginalized by structure of a categorization-based society. The authors stated that it has become abundantly clear that “women’s issues could not be limited to the physical and emotional violence that is inflicted on female bodies” (Sangtin Writers, 125). It is rather a complex issue of intersecting sociopolitical aspects of one’s life. An example that they gave…

We as Americans reminisce on history to see and understand the advancements we have accomplished and the same can be said of not only the advancement of women but also the image of how women are portrayed. Although in today’s day and age, their figures and beauty are scrutinized but also exploited. For instance in both Tennessee Williams motion picture, “A Street Car Named Desire” and Lorraine Hansberry A Raisin in the Sun you are able to see the evolution of the not only the portal of women but also the advancements they accomplish.…
In Card’s argument, she centralizes the abandonment of marriage and its entirety since it jeopardizes a woman’s autonomy to marry, seek long-term relationships and even be single. In opposition, Feminist, Diana Meyers, has a piece on Personal Autonomy and the Paradox of Feminine Socialization, which strongly supports the theory of autonomy deriving from the self while considering environmental stimuli. Meyers persistently magnifies the belief that autonomy is defined by expressing your true self by avoiding conformist attitudes, recognizing the need for inner change, as well as considering internal reflections and external guidance from the outside world. Like Card, Meyers believes that raw, authentic choices from the self is what makes up…
Sparta taught its people for only practical reasons. All their education was directed toward prompt obedience to authority. I believe Sparta is the best place to live in the world. Sparta offers women more freedom. Some people think that the Spartan government is cruel. Sparta is feared by other city-states due to its strong military.…
Women have lived under suppression since the beginning of America. They have been denied basic rights, forced into to predetermined roles in society, and faced severe sexism. Although some men worked with the feminist movement, Cady Stanton said, “that women herself must do this work; for woman alone can understand the height, the depth, the length and the breadth of her degradation (Kelly, Parameswaran, & Schiedewind, 2012, p. 556).” Feminism does not focus on those who opposed them, but the women and the movements that changed the lives of women both in the present and those who helped set the stage for later women to continue the fight for equality. Seneca Falls is used as a historical mark to mark the beginning of the feminist movement…

What is Feminism? According to the Webster Online Dictionary, feminism is the “belief in social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.” Feminist movements are formed to give these rights to women who have been deprived of their privileges and rights denied by society. In this essay, I will discuss feminism in America as a movement which aims to end sexism, sexist exploitation and oppression. According to bell hooks “the feminist movement is not about being anti-male, the movement is to clearly address the problem of sexism in society today” (hooks 2000: viii-ix). What Hooks meant by this statement is that the feminist movement is not a male-bashing movement, but a movement for us as Americans and worldwide to end unfair treatment of people because of their sex.…
In The Power of the Positive Woman, author Phyllis Schlafly sets out to redefine the dogmas of womanhood and introduce the Positive Woman, defined as someone who recognizes that women and men are different, and that those differences “provide the key to her success and fulfillment as a woman.” Rather than trying to eliminate the degradation of women, she claims that these dogmas have the opposite effect and demean women even more. On the contrary, Schlafly argues that these same differences some are trying to get rid of are essential and practical. In fact, the human race itself could not have evolved and thrived to the current scale without these sexual differences. Instead of the desire for uniformity, Schlafly encourages the recognition and benefit from diversity.…
Virginia Held is a modern day philosopher with theories on the feminist view in philosophy. All of the major philosophers have always written from the male perspective. As far back as the Bible, most major writings have always been geared towards men. They were considered the predominant species from the creation of Eve from Adam's rib. Many philosophers have described worlds that were based upon men, war, and reason. These theories were based on the experience of man. Women were too emotional and simple to understand the complexity of the world. Philosophers have always focused on man's influence and role in the world. These philosophers have downplayed or ignored the role of women in history. This paper will discuss the gender biased opinions of other philosophers as well as the importance of women in life. Virginia Held states that the history of philosophy has always been in favor of man. All theories have been based upon the male point of view. Philosophers' theories have been based on "assumptions and concepts that are by no means gender neutral". (Morality and Moral Controversies, pg. 89) Held's paper discusses the biased point of views displayed by many prominent philosophers. She has maintained that with the appearance of feminism and feminist ethics, major changes will have to be made in philosophy and theories. It is a fact that men and women have a different view on all things. This can be attributed to the fact that man and woman have different beliefs on what is important. This is not because women are unreasonable, but because of emotion. While women will try to do what is right, their theories of right and wrong are based upon the feelings that they have for the individual. A perfect example of this would be someone close to us was sick and needed medicine.…
Feminism is a fight for equality and should help everyone realize that equality needs to be shared on a global spectrum. The push for feminism has been widely spread across North America but it needs to be brought into other countries as well. Gay says, “What about other women of color? For Hispanic and Latina women, Indian women, Middle Eastern women, Asian women, their absence in popular culture is even more pronounced, their need for relief just as palpable and desperate” (Gay 268). Feminism is more than just local and the women struggling across the world need to be recognized too. Aside from women solely, there needs to be support for those of every gender specification, sexual orientation, age, race, and so on. Gay reminds the readers to never bystand and take a stand against wrongful discrimination, “As individuals, we may not be able to do much, but when we’re silent when someone uses the word ‘gay’ as an insult, we are falling short. When we don’t vote to support equal marriage rights for all, we are falling short” (Gay 178). Even if the discrimination is not directly said to a gay person, using the term “gay” in a derogatory way is wrong and hurtful. She encourages her readers to divert that person, and others from using the wrongful term in the wrong context. Finally, she says that help is needed everywhere, “So many of us are reaching out, hoping someone out there will grab our hands and remind us we are not as…
Feminism: a topic of discussion in many homes and classrooms, which asserts the utmost attention amongst its listeners. A crazy ideal that believes women hold fundamental rights among men, and deserve the same treatment, the same opportunities. Feminism has grown since its conception in the early 20th century, and has catapulted upward in a grand and illustrious fashion, clinging to the souls of women who will no longer be oppressed by an abusive patriarchy. However, in this decade, feminism has become the topic of crude humor, has been made the punchline of jokes directed toward women. Feminism has become merely a way to generalize women as “crazy, hormonal monsters” who should never have a say in democracy because their “time of…
As constantly seen throughout history, women have been battling and questioning society’s standard so they can be seen as individuals rather than a lesser being in comparison to men. These civil liberties of owning property and having the right to vote prolongs further than that. Women want to be seen in the same degree as men when it comes down having an education, a place in office, being in a predominantly male workforce, and the right to manage their reproductive lives. The fight for women's rights even extends to modern day with the rise of feminism and the demand that men and women should be considered equal in any social, political, and economic entities.…
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a powerful leader in the modern day feminist movement, once said in a speech presented at TEDxEuston, We Should All Be Feminists, “Some people ask: ‘Why the word feminist? Why not just say you are a believer in human rights, or something like that?’ Because that would be dishonest. Feminism is, of course, part of human rights in general—but to choose to use the vague expression human rights is to deny the specific and particular problem of gender. It would be a way of pretending that it was not women who have, for centuries, been excluded. It would be a way of denying that the problem of gender targets women.” The actions of the F1 generation of feminist women who sparked the women's rights…
Feminism examines society particularly from the viewpoint of women, and argues that mainstream sociology has been focused on the concerns of men, and failed to consider the unequal position of women. It is a conflict theory, and the basic assumption is that women suffer certain injustices on account of their sex.…
