Rocky’s mise-en-scene :audience understand more about the character Adrian. and how she changes in her personality when she meets Rocky. At the time Rock walks into the pet shop where Adrian works, the filmmaker lets people see her as an old-fashioned girl. She wears a grey cardigan, old-fashioned shirt and cat-eye glasses like a homemaker. She also is a unconfident and quiet girl; she always put her head down when she walks and always avoids looking people in the eyes when she communicates. When Rocky tries to communicate with her, she does not respond; she completely focuses on cleaning out the birdcage and hides herself behind it. The filmmaker set the cage between Rocky and Adrian with the meaning a couple not yet come together. More than that, the shot which comes with Adrian’s face behind the birdcage, is a symbol of she is living in a trapped life and does not have enough courage to release herself. When Rocky asks her to walk home together, it is like he opens the cage's door to release her.
It shows Jack’s is better than Ennis. More than that, the difference about the colors of the two character’s hats is a way to show the difference in their personalities. Wearing a white hat shows that Ennis is an introvert man while Jack with his black hat tells that he is an out-going man who takes an initiative in their relationship. Secondly, the cinematographer uses the lighting technique to portray Ennis and Jack’s love relationship. The first scene, when the two characters show their love for each other in the mountain, is filmed with the dark as the way to tell that they try to cover their love.
