Discuss the relationship shared between Joseph Hooper and his son, Edmund Hooper in chapter 1. Comment on the relationship and fortify your comments with quotes from the passage. The characters of Joseph and Edmund Hooper are introduced to us in the exposition in which Joseph Hooper and his son Edmund Hooper are visiting senior Edmund Hooper who is bedridden. Right from the start of the story, the reader gets the impression that there is a lot of family wealth that the Hoopers have, because of the way the house is described. Personally, it gave the reader an impression that the relation between the father and son would not be very strong, as stereotypically, rich households are not unified. The first incident when the reader actually got an idea of the relation is when Edmund Hooper said, ‘All he looks like is one of his dead old moths’ and to this Joseph Hooper reacted by saying, ‘This is no way to speak! You must show respect. This incident tells the reader that Joseph Hooper wants his son to be a disciplined man and that he will not bear any inappropriate behavior. The second incident was when Joseph Hooper informed his son that he would be in London for most of the time, even during the son’s holiday. Edmund was not at all surprised to hear this and that did annoy his father. He then thought to himself, that he was trying and that he wished he could do better but he also knew that it wouldn’t be easy without a woman beside him. This was the first time that we realized that Edmund’s mother was not in his life; it was only later that we were informed that she died. This fact can also help us determine the father-son relation. Because there is no woman in Edmund’s life and because his father is always away at work, this would make him a lonely child and in order to get his father’s attention he would create mischief. The next incident would create a contrast. Right After

Hooper’s life. The descriptions were vague with him being called, “a gentlemanly person…nodding kindly.” (1) A choice that Hawthorne made to keep the character’s motivations vague is that the reader is unable to enter Mr. Hooper’s mind. This creates a physical barrier between the audience and Mr. Hooper is preventing a full understanding of the situation. Ambiguity exists with his relationship with Elizabeth since they are engaged, but there is no evidence of romance.…

And now, that Addie is dead, wouldn’t it be more logical to take Fowler’s undeniably eloquent analysis of maternity as matter and pin it to an unavoidable denial in coping with death, rather than view it as an instrument in minimizing mother’s existence in order to aid the patriarchal law of order? In other words, before we adopt the novel’s symbolism as a conscious product of some systematic agenda in pursuing patriarchy, it is important to consider Bundren’s estrangement as a product of a sudden instability, fear, and uncertainty, deriving from Addie’s death and driving the family into desperate attempts of creating a false distance between the mother and themselves, forcedly subduing pain by separating the inseparable in pursuit of a new…
