Onimasa is a great film that highlights the Yakuza culture of 1920’s Japan. The film showcases the daily routine and social foundations of the Yakuza. The plot follows the development of Matsue, a girl who is taken away from her home to start her new life in the family. I believe Matsue to be a contrast to the misogynistic stereotype of the Yakuza. Many women in the film are shown as figures of beauty rather than their assets. However, Matsue is the only female character who had been complimented on her intelligence rather than her looks. When young Matsue comes home from school to speak with her father about going to girl’s school, he is deeply appalled. He believes that women are tainted when educated.
