What Adults Miss About Adolescents who Grow up In Cyberspace By Brent Staples

I understand exactly where Brent Staples' idea that teens are missing out on vital parts of what is a necessary part of life. I agree that this is happening, however I do not agree this is a negative trend. I would be considered one of these adolscents that Brent talks about, as I myself grew up using the computer as a form of comunication. Brent neglects to realize that it is virtually impossible to not have human interaction in an adolescents daily life because of school. There has always been certain teens who are more or less sociable. One thing that Brent does not explain, is why he is so concerned about the subject. Is he concerned for his children or maybe he is upset that times are changing. His personal reason to this particular issue needs an explanation. If Brent gave an indicationof where his sentiment stems from, this could aid the reader in connecting with his asseration. I feel that his ethos is hurt by this. This can easily occur in the real world as well. But the only way to know what is real and what is not online, is through interacting online and gaining experience. This experience can be gained when a person communicates on the internet. If this means a child is not getting interaction, it is the parents responisiblity to limit the computer time if it is overly excessive.. If a child is on the computer days on end , it is just as bad as watching TV all day. They can easily limit the type forcing the child to find another activity. Just as well, Brent says that it is only adolscents that mask themselves behind the computer, when in fact equally as many adults do this as well. Adults go to the internet for the same reasons teens do, and Brent should realize they encounter the same effects if they are on the computer

    This is infact false, for it is todays century’s kids who are prevent themselves from becoming more sociable and becoming more involved in outside activities. Stuck online all day, kids don’t even bother to go outside anymore, even less work on things such as their own schoolwork. They have become more dependent on the internet, which will not do them much good when it comes to relying on their capabilities. If kids are allowed to “run wild online,” that is all they will do all day. For that reason many parents limit their online connection because they do not want lazy children who have no goals in their lives and do not want to pursue a valuable career. Parents who truly care about their child and their safety, will allow their children to play sports or participate in other safe activities. It is true that many parents are also very overprotective of their children when it comes to going out, but they would rather have them participate in other activities that isn’t online. Being online all day will not allow them to “explore their identity and the world around them,” it will make them lazy, dependent on the internet, and influence them in the ways society thinks about them, not what they think about themselves. Cyberbullying, for example, had increased as a result of online usage, this problem has led to deaths and other terrible outcomes. Parent’s will help avoid matter as these by preventing children from being absorbed online, that way, the bully can not cyberbully, and the victim can not be cyberbullied. From personal experience, I can say that I am more focused on my school work and other activities, such as sports, because my parents have taught me not to get turning to “social media and [my] mobile phone to gossip, flirt and socialize with [my]…

    “Isolated by the Internet” an essay written by Clifford Stoll pinpoints exactly what researchers believe the internet is doing too much of today’s society. Stoll explains in detail that Internet is breaking apart family values, slowing personal interaction, distancing reality, and robbing personal time. Clifford Stoll has provided evidence that the internet is breaking apart many families and distancing them from one another. For example, Stoll expresses that many parents bring their work home, and spend only six to eight minutes a day talking with their children (106). Furthermore, Stoll states that productivity in the home takes away from playtime that even in our alone time work seeps into even the most intimate of moments (107,108). Although internet is a fast, aid in society it can also slow basic personal interaction “These electronic intermediaries dull our abilities to read each other’s gestures ad facial expressions, to express our feelings, to strike up conversations with strangers, to craft stories, to tell jokes” (106). Clifford Stoll states that it causes a person not to learn basic skills such as how to interrupt, how to speak in front of a large audience, or worst when to talk or be silent. (107) He brings in psychologists and scientist points of view that contradict significantly with those of major computing companies. For example Stoll references to psychology professor Philip Zimbardo who states that technological advances cause shyness which is a basic lack of communication skill, where as Intel stated “This is not about the Technology, per se; it’s about how it is used (105,106). Stoll uses Zimbardo’s personal account to explain computer isolation, Zimbardo will occasionally walk down the hallway and say hello and to some this is shocking and feels it is invading their space (110).
