Miss Congeniality Essay
Miss Congeniality was the first of three Sandra Bullock films to be directed by Donald Petrie. Rated ‘M’, due to its low level violence, the all American comedy film was released by Warner Bros in 2000. Miss Congeniality later went on to claim the ‘Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy’, ‘Funniest Actress in a Motion Picture,’ and ‘Favourite Actress – Comedy’ .The success of this film is based upon Bullock’s acting abilities and a great script that includes adventure, action, humour and romance all in one.

Gracie Hart, played by Sandra Bullock, is an undercover FBI agent with a reputation for being aggressive, tomboyish and hard-nosed. Her argumentative nature has made her few friends, apart from her trusting,

The camera angles included high angle and eyeline matching, with a mixture of long shots, Plan-American shots, medium shots, medium close ups, close ups, extreme closes up and subjective shots. The extreme close up was of Hart getting her fingers waxed, too really show how “rough” of a character she really is and to show what she has to go through in order to be successful undercover agent. All cameras were used at high and level height and were straight and canted frames.

Editing techniques used throughout this extract include shot reverse shots, when characters are having conversations, and establishing shots at the beginning and end of the extract, a reverse establishing shot and expansion. The expansion takes places at the end of the scene when Hart is walking out of the hangar; this has been used to emphasise she is a “changed” person on the outside, but on the inside she is still her normal self.

This movie is fun to watch. The storyline of turning an ugly duckling into a beauty is every teenage girls dream. The bright humour is what makes it stand out. I loved the performance of Sandra Bullock and Michael Caine, who are hilarious; and they pretty much take over the show. But overall, I think if you are a fan of Sandra, is it a must

“You might be correct about Julia Roberts and Pretty Women, and that she was not a stripper, however, are you aware of the research she out into the role? The time she did spend with exotic dancers, and high-class prostitutes in an attempt to understand them, so that when audiences viewed the film, they could believe she was Vivian Ward? Does consorting with such people and learning from them make her immoral, Katrina, and lessen your respect for the woman or does it just make her an actress, a professional, who wanted nothing more than to give the best performance possible? Can the same be said of you? As much as you declare that you will and can do the film, that decision is not yours to make, it’s the Director’s, and as to if he has faith that you can deliver the Lily he needs for the production to be a success. Can you, or will your career pan out the same as your Mothers, the woman you so rely upon to provide advice and direction, whether you admit it or not? We’re only granted one life, and should not allow someone else to live it for us, so take hold of your own desires Katrina. Relish your sexual and emotional freedom, and Lily will relish…

The movie was an example of post feminism at its best, as in the 1970’s, only 15% of action adventure movies cast female leads. The movie was directed by Pitof and was released on July 23 by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures. The cast members include Halle Berry, who plays Catwoman, Benjamin Bratt, Sharon Stone and Frances Conroy. I have chosen to analyse this movie because females are not usually given dominant roles in superhero movies, especially as the lead character. There are many stereotypes that surround women, and I believe this movie challenges those.…

The scene opens up with the camera pointing directly down to a cup of coffee that Beth had just made, this allows the audience to feel as if they are experiencing Beth’s point of view. Also, to allow the viewer to feel in the point of view of Beth the camera begins to become fuzzy to show how Beth’s vision wasn’t very clear at the time of the scene. The camera then switches upward to focus only on Beth’s facial expression which appears disorderly and fatigued. The angle switches again to show that Beth was having difficulty with her fine motor skills (picking up her cup of coffee). The camera continues to stay in the angle of an on looking spectator up until the part of Beth falling to the floor. It is from this point of the scene until it ends that the camera switches back and forth from Mitch’s point of view to their son Clark’s point of view. This allows the audience to feel more touched by the scene by viewing all three character’s perspectives as such a traumatic scene is…

The Film Miss Congeniality (2000), directed by Donald Petrie, attempted to show typical stereotypes of women and show how they can be disproved and unfair in a slightly dramatic and comical way. This holds true throughout the whole movie. The film shows a typical tomboy whom no one notices to be attractive change into a stunningly beautiful woman that most definitely everyone notices. This happens because Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) who is at the bottom of the ranks in her FBI division takes on an assignment that changes her life and how every one of her colleagues view her. The assignment is to go undercover at the Miss America pageant to find out and try to prevent someone from doing terrorist acts at the pageant. Agent Gracy Hart is then forced to become Gracie Lou Freebush "a.k.a. Miss New Jersey? so get an inside position in the pageant. Family is an important part of life. Families shape us to who we are today, what we say, and how we control our lives. They are a need when growing up. In To Kill A Mockingbird, the book is about the life of a eight year old white girl in the early 1930’s when the Great Depression was at its peak and not many people had enough money to support themselves. Jem was always protective around Scout because she has always had a big mouth and Scout had always relied on Jem to be her playmate throughout her years, this has created a solid sibling relationship with one another. In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, she uses Scout and Jem to explore sibling love.…

In the trailer of Miss Representation educated people, professional people explained the women situation and status in the untied state of America is in these days, and since when it was like that and till when it will keep on going. The trailer summarizes the story in almost eight and half minutes, describing women’s role in the society. From my perspective I think Katie Couric (Anchor/ CBS evening news) said the main massage of this trailer at the end of the movie where she said, “ it depends on who is piloting the plane.” And that what they talked about at the begging of the trailer where they showed the stud of how many hours a day our kids spend on the social media and media in general and that was 10 hours and 45 minutes a day, everyday. After those professors, actors and filmmakers explained how dangerous it is if…

Bored off my mind one night, I decided to pop the DVD in and have a look with my cousin. Both her and I agreed it was one of the best movies we had ever seen! We loved every character, we thought it was so well done, and the plot was just amazing. There is not one girl that can not relate with this movie because relating to one or more of the female characters is so easy and comforting. This is probably the reason male critics gave it such a harsh review because the movie entails women being intelligent, not always choosing men or marriage, and worst of all being independent.…

In Jane Austen’s novel Persuasion, diction and subversive tone depict Austen’s disdain and disapproval towards the society. Sir Walter Elliot informs Anne and Mr. Shepherd about his irritation toward people who strive to rise above the society. He mentions how naval officer is a profession that transits “man with obscure birth into undue distinction” (Austen 14), and expresses his disgust towards the officers growing old in appearance sooner than any other man. Sir Walter declared, “I was in company with two men… Admiral Baldwin, the most deplorable looking personage you can imagine… I never saw quite so wretched an example of what a seafaring life can do…” (Austen 14). Austen implies the superficial nobilities…

The girls were more interested in nabbing a good husband than achieving scholastic and intellectual growth. The main characters were; catty but well brought-up Betty (Kirsten Dunst), potential graduate student Joan (Julia Stilies), insecure Connie (Ginnifer Goodwyn) and campus slut Giselle (Maggie Gyllenhaal). All of the women in the film were defined by their relationships with men, and their happiness was dependent on their success with the opposite sex. Julie Roberts (Katherine) was an excellent choice for the role of the liberal teacher. She had the needed depth and dimension required for the…
