Miss Gee
From the title, we can see the character of Miss Gee establishing. Through the use of ‘Miss’ we learn that she is single. Moreover, the first stanza shows that this poem uses a first person narrator as it states ‘let me tell you a little story’. Not only does this show that the narrator knows Miss Gee on a personal level but also the opening resembles a bed time story. The writer uses the word ‘little’ perhaps to indicate that Miss Gee’s life was insignificant. Furthermore, the idea of Miss Gee being insignificant and ordinary is supported by the information of her door number ‘At Number 83’. This shows that she lives down a long road and we don’t associate the number 83 with anything significant, just like her. Also, the number 83 is odd suggests that Miss Gee also is odd. The second stanza proceeds to give us information about her physical appearance, which is unflattering. With a ‘squint in her left eye’ the writer suggests that she has a distorted view on life. Her ‘slopping shoulders’ suggests that she lacks confidence and perhaps is tired of life. A lack of companionship is established early on in the poem and with lips that are ‘thin and small’ the lack of conversation is highlighted and with ‘no bust at all’ we understand that Miss Gee isn’t feminine and this is why she has no relationship.
The poem continues to highlight the limitations of Miss Gee’s life through the repetition of ‘Clevedon Terrace’ showing that her life doesn’t have many new elements to it and perhaps her life, like the poem, is very repetitive. Also, the writer states that Miss Gee has a ‘mac for wet days’ and a ‘green umbrella’ this suggests that Miss Gee is very cautious and is always prepared for the worst which might even show that she is a very dull person. This is further elaborated on as Auden writes that Miss Gee had ‘Harsh’ brakes. The use of ‘Harsh’ adds a rougher tone to the calm and slow poem, it also shows that when life shows any change Miss Gee is quick to press the

The poem begins by undercutting the beautiful, pleasant imagery promised by the title through the terse bluntness of the “dusk, and cold.” Flowers are indeed present as the title suggests, but only “frail, melancholy” ones, gathered by the subservient act of “kneeling” among “ashes and loam”. There is a definite sense of ending – both of the day, and of something grander. The persona’s attempts at engaging with the natural world are crudely rebuffed – she cannot succeed in her musical engagement, merely “try”, which results only in an “indifferent” blackbird “fret[ting] and strop[ing]” under “Ambiguous light. Ambiguous sky.” This unfriendly environment in which the poem begins foregrounds the sense of loss which characterises so much of Harwood’s poetry, an inevitable, confronting finality emphasised by the bluntness of the language and plethora of full stops. The adult world presented here is one of uncertainty, difficulty and ambiguity.…

The poem, Suburban Sonnet, idealizes the harsh realities of an Australian housewife, creating sympathetic tones to the readers. Gwen Harwood was born in Brisbane, Queensland in 1920. Harwood was raised in a family of strong women, her grandmother earning her own living until she was 80, and her mother was a feminist who was into community issues. Her family was self-sufficient and this can be noted in the themes of some of her poems. Gwen Harwood's poetry is written in a 1950’s context. A woman's concerns then would not have been expressed. It was a woman's responsibility and place to make a home for her husband, upkeep it and raise a family, all the while making the duty seem effortless and enjoyable. An example of this “She comforts them; and wraps it in a paper featuring: Tasty dishes from stale bread,” (stanza one, line thirteen). It is negative, bitter and melancholic. This appears to the readers that Harwood would like to creative a negative view of Australian motherhood. This discourse is evidenced at early as the first line “She practises a fugue, though it can matter to no one now if she plays well or not.” (stanza one, line one).…

“To live in these conditions” Stella is not what I like to indulge myself in; oh never, never could I imagine, could I picture - Oh “Only Poe! Mr. Edgar Allen Poe! – could do it justice!” ha! Oh Stella, this countryside retreat does seem to remind me of the wonderful Belle Reve; “a great big place with white columns”. There are many different methods of cortical specialisation and these are: MRI scan, PET scan, Electroencephalogram, Post Mortem and Neurosurgery. These are developed methods of studying cortical specialisation in the brain in order to be able to predict, control and explain non –human and human behaviour. Neurosurgery is considered to be an invasive way of investigating cortical specialisation as it involves manipulating structures within the brain. There are two ways in which neurosurgery can be performed and these are lesions which is a surgical procedure used to cut neural connections in the brain, and ablation which is a surgical procedure used to remove areas of the brain. Post mortem studies are a research method of the brain of a patient, who has had something wrong with them such as struggling to speak, so this is examined after death. There are also used in police force and crime investigations to see how the person has died. EEG is a non – invasive measurement which is electrical activity of the brain which is produced by recording from electrodes which are placed on the individuals scalp. A PET scan is a procedure where the brain is assessed in various locations depending on different level of neural activity whilst the brain is active; likewise the MRI scan is taken whilst the brain is active and is where scanners use strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce an image of the brain of an individual.…

    The Young Housewife

The details of this poem are so unassuming that they may easily be missed. The young woman is not in a negligee, she is "in negligee." One also must do a sort of double-take to figure out how the speaker could know this if she is behind the walls of a house. Though the standard line on Williams is that he freezes moments of perception (language used to render perceptive instants), this poem, while apparently simple, utilizes a three-part temporal framework. The first stanza describes a moment when the speaker passes "solitary." Is he on his way back in the second stanza which begins "Then again . . ." or is this possibly a fantasy on his part? In relation to the only, self-consciously stated, image: what are we to make of the implicit connection between the woman as a leaf and the leaves crushed by the car's wheels? Is the woman something crushed or discarded? All of these questions, as well as the implicit motion of the speaker who is driving by in a car, tend to place the interlocking phrases and descriptions in a kind of metaphorical suspension. Underlying this suspension of what is, after all, a small drama, has to be the speaker's unstated desire for the woman. Once again, the poet's desire structures the details, progress, and interrelation of elements in the poem.…
