The overall proportion of hits by throw 100 was 0.73. The longest streak of hits was from throws #87 to #98, inclusive, for a length of 12 consecutive hits. The longest streak of misses was from throws #55 to #60, inclusive, for a length of 6 consecutive misses. When compared against the previous simulation, the longest streak of hits was substantially longer; in the previous simulation we had Shaquille with a streak of 9 hits, while here we have a streak of 12 hits. For misses, in both cases the longest streak was of 6 misses. We can conclude that we’ll see longer streaks of hits as the probability of hits…
In the scientific report, See the Ball, Hit the Ball, scientists, Jessica Witt and Dennis Proffitt, discussed their study of ball size perception when players are hitting well as opposed to when they are in a slump. The report included a background of the research, the methods used, the results, and a discussion of the study. Witt and Proffitt conducted the study to determine how performance efficiency and perception are correlated by determine if there is a relationship between hitting success and perceived ball size.…
Thank you for your interest in the policing strategies of the 2nd Division. I will do my best to answer your questions. First, I do receive, review and evaluate ShotSpotter information in the coverage areas on a continual basis. However, I do not use this information to predict future shootings because the vast majority of shots fired are not associated with a violent criminal incident which makes it difficult to determine when & where the next shooting will occur based upon that one data set. The value of ShotSpotter, in my opinion, is it notifies officers in a timely manner and serves as a reliable indicator of where the shots are coming from. This allows officers to respond more quickly, enhances their safety, and increases the likelihood of an arrest/ evidence collection. As you know, the evidence (shell casings) collected taken to the Crime Scene Unit and ran through NIBN. NIBN is a valuable tool which helps us establish links between when and where many of these guns are being used. Secondly, the majority of the shots fired data indicated by ShotSpotter on…
This cult classic film has gained a lot of popularity over the years and is considered by a number of people to be one of the best sports movies of all time, or at least one of the best hockey movies of all time (Wait, aside from "The Mighty Ducks" and "Miracle," what other hockey movies are out there?!). Look, I am not much of a sports guy; much less a hockey guy, but I do know movies and in terms of entertainment value. I’m sorry, but this film falls flat on the ice!…
Joe DiMaggio is known as one of the greatest baseball players in baseball history by setting a record that is most likely unable to break with 56 straight hitting streaks. However, while DiMaggio was on his hitting streak when he caught up to George Sisler’s record with 41 games hitting streak, his hitting streak started to catch the public’s attention. Furthermore, DiMaggio also said a quote when people were asking him if he would break Sisler’s record and DiMaggio replied, “I’m not thinking a whole lot about it…I’ll either break it or I won’t”. This quote not only does it show that he does not give himself a huge amount of pressure on breaking the record but also he treats everything with a calm attitude and letting destiny decide everything else in the future. Joe DiMaggio’s 56 batting streak started from May 15, 1941 when he was playing the Chicago White Sox and ended after 2 months on July 17, 1941 in Cleveland. The hitting streak is still well known around the whole United States and the world because it’s a record that’s been there for 70 years already yet nobody was able to break the record yet. Besides DiMaggio’s spectacular performance in…
The Perfect shot is a book written by Elaine Marie Alphin. The setting of the book takes place in a small town in Indiana called Willisburg. The setting impacts the plot because Brian has a friend named julius which is one of the only black kids in town gets pulled over by the cops for making a wrong turn and he he did not receive a ticket the police officer took him to jail and this event changes juluis very much. The point of view of the book is first person because Brian is the one who is telling the story. The theme of the book is not to judge someone by their race.…
Role playing games with simulated violence are diverting for kids. Games with violent roles in them teach the kids that the world is not safe. It teaches violence is okay for the one killing. What is missing is empathy. Where is the sympathy. in the violent games. Instead of teaching harm to others, why not teach empathy?…
having had sometime in their career. As sports evolve, players are bigger, faster , and…
According to Galdwell (2011) a psychologist named Barnsley came to believe that what he saw was not a chance occurrence but an iron law of Canadian hockey: “in any elite group of hockey players—the very best of the best—40 percent of the players will have been born between January and March, 30 percent between April and June, 20 percent between July and September, and 10 percent between October and December" (Chapter 1, p. 22).…
In officer involved shootings, I found a lot that confused me. In the paragraphs Sighted versus Unsighted Shooting, Shots Fired & Hit Probability, and Night Sights, is what I’m planning on writing about. In my opinion this does not make any sense, either you do something or you don’t. And it seems that the police officers need more training.…
Athletic ability is not only a talent, but a hard-earned trait for some athletes. Through days, months, and years of training, they prepare to perform to the best of their abilities on the playing field. Athletic performance has improved drastically from the years 1940 to 2000 (Lewis). Along with this increase of physical ability also came an increase in pay rates. There have been new systems set in place for athletes, such as free agency. The purpose of free agency is to enhance competition levels between players whom are fighting for an open spot on a…
The daily rituals of baseball players give them a sense of confidence, control, and competence over their performance. Every player is judged from his performance and the salary and position stems from whether or not they perform up to standards or above. Many players have the talent but sometimes no luck, a pitcher can have a horrible record yet have a low ERA, earned run average. Pitchers tend to have certain rituals that protect them from bad luck, pitcher Ron Bryant would add a new stick of bubble gum to his back pocket after every game he won. Activities as these are done so to give the player a sense of control because many situations in baseball are out of their control.…
The image or painting I chose to analyze is called “The Swing” by Jean-Honoré Fragonard and it was completed in London 1767. This particular piece I would consider being a “Scenery” type or a Rococo style and was done using oil paint on a canvas. It is currently being displayed within the “Wallace Collection” at London, the piece its self is of a young man hidden in the bushes, watching a woman on a swing, being pushed by her elderly husband, almost hidden in the shadows, and unaware of the lover. As the lady goes high on the swing, she lets the young man take a furtive peep under her dress; all while flicking her own shoe off in the direction of a Cupid and turning her back to two angelic cherubim on the side of her husband.…
External discoveries that lead to more profound internal discoveries allow us to gain an understanding of the world we live in. Discoveries can suddenly trigger an epiphany or the realisation and understanding may be more of a gradual process. This experience can manifest in many different ways. It can result in a broadening of the mind, whether this changes our understanding of the global community in a positive or negative way. The Motorcycle Diaries by Ernesto Che Guevara, The Sniper by Liam O’Flaherty, and Paperman directed by John Kahrs all explore this concept through the use of both literary and visual techniques. The Motorcycle Diaries explores the impact of Che’s discoveries in South America including his understanding of the widespread…
Activities in many domains, especially sports, are seasonal because most scheduled competitions occur during a single season of the year. If individuals enjoyed deliberate practice, they ought to practice at a uniformly high level all year. Instead, athletes train much harder during the preseason period and during the season itself; during the off season they often reduce the level of training dramatically (Reilly, 1990a; Reilly & Secher, 1990). Many individuals who have practiced for a long period of time give up their aspirations to compete and excel in an activity. Without the goal of improving performance, the motivation to engage in practice vanishes. Kaminski, Mayer, and Ruoff (1984) found that many elite adolescents who decided to stop competing remained active in the domain but virtually stopped engaging in…
