Missing Clinical Experience
Today I had the opportunity to redo a missed clinical date. I joined in Professor Connor’s Thursday group at RCH. I actually really enjoyed Professor Connor’s teaching style. She moved swift enough to give ample learning opportunities to all of us! I appreciated her moving so quickly as I got to administer my first injection! Not only did I administer a flu shot, but I also administered a heparin injection and an insulin injection! Professor Connors was the real MVP today. I could not believe how much of a confidence boost it was for me. I am almost happy I had to redo a missed clinical.
Describe the negatives of your experience today:
The abnormal negative experience I had today was actually with the RN I was assigned to. She expressed concerns over certain instructors and our capabilities as RN students. This was difficult to hear as I infer she wanted me to agree with her. I am proud to be an SJVC student and feel that our skill capabilities match up well with where we are in the program.

I am adjusting well to 12 hours and I am feeling more confident with my presence as a student nurse. I also try to find moments to make a patient feel that he/she is a human being with feelings. It is important to me that every patient feel

As a nursing student, I am particularly glad that I was exposed to the concept of medical errors this early on in my training so I can actively define my role in preventing them. The documentary reminded me that I am entering a profession where my actions have real and significant consequences. A sloppy or incomplete performance in medicine is unacceptable and I must find the best way to become as competent as possible. I was immediately encouraged to become a better student in the classroom, to work harder and retain necessary knowledge that I know may be of great consequence one day. Additionally, since my skills have not yet been fully established, I can take certain measures to ensure that bad and perhaps dangerous habits which can lead to errors, do not develop.…

I will be going to St Jude Cardiac Rehab for my clinical. This week I could not start my clinical rotation because I did not have clearance from the hospital administration. However, I spoke to my preceptor Maria and arranged to start my first day of clinical on next week Thursday, which is September 1st, from 10 AM to 6 PM. There are two programs: one is traditional cardiac rehab and other one is ‘Ornish’ program. Next week I will attend Wednesday and Thursday, so I can have experience of both programs. I am very excited and looking forward to start my Community Health Clinical program…

After hearing from Dr. Holt-Macey about matrix rotations available at Abington, I immediately emailed her with my interest. By completing a matrix rotation of Ambulatory Care, Institutional, and Internal Medicine, I will be able to establish myself at the hospital and place myself in a greater position to make a positive impact as a student pharmacist. I will be able to familiarize myself with the pharmacy team as well as the other health professions in the hospital. The more time I have at Abington, the better I can develop relationships with my colleagues. I believe having continuity with one’s peers (as well as environment) will go a long way in furthering my learning development.…

Nurse fatigue is experienced every day in the nursing field, it is the inadequate adaptation and restoration of work energy (Drake, Luna, Georges, & Steege, 2012). Nurse fatigue can be emotional, physical or mental, it can also be a feeling of weariness, tiredness, lack of energy or having trouble performing at work (Drake, Luna, Georges, & Steege, 2012). Also it can be caused by working long shifts and causing exhaustion from staff burnout, leading to an adverse effect on patient outcome. It is a huge threat to patient safety. Fatigue can also cause a negative impact on nurse safety, and there is an increased risk in causing injury with a worker that is tired (Maust, 2015). Studies have shown that nursing fatigue is related to the shift length nurses work, and nursing performance can be impaired and increases the chance of making an error (Maust, 2015). The nurses who work 12.5 hours have a risk three times greater for making errors (Mason, Leavitt & Chaffee, 2014).…

This was a good clarifying question to ask, but perhaps should have been used later on in the consultation when trying to find out more specific details. This would have been a good time to acknowledge the amount of pain the patient was in and recognise the inconvenience for her as she still had to go to work even though she was in significant pain. After this, I could have maybe asked what kind of pain it was? Referring to dull, sharp etc but not mentioning the types, letting her describe it herself and if she didn’t understand asking her to explain what the pain feels like.…

During the second half of the semester I showed strengths by recognizing my own limits and seeking assistance/guidance, seeking out opportunities, reflecting on my own nursing practice and keeping open communication with my instructor and RN. During one of my shifts, I worked with client who wanted to change but was hooked up to a VAC. I recognized that I wasn’t educated on VACs, and was unsure as to whether I could unplug it so she could change. I sought out a RN and charge nurse to help me figure out how to do this. After being guided through the process of what to do, I was able to help the client change. I have also taken the opportunity to reflect on my own nursing practice through my RPN’s. My RPN’s have showed a thorough analysis of my feelings and questions that arise throughout my shifts. In addition, I always make sure to stay in touch with my client’s nurse and my instructor throughout my shift. I chart off at the end of each shift and give report to the nurse. I also took an opportunity to empty a Blake drain on a client who was not my own. I had the RN guide me through it, as it was my first time performing this task.…

    Nurse Staffing Case Study

These shifts still need to be filled because of the ever increasing patient amount within the hospital. These extra hours will play a toll on our current employees who are expected to step up and take these extra shifts. “Long work hours can lead to fatigue, restlessness, inadequate sleep, pain and deficits in performance and reaction time as a result of increased exposure to physical demands and insufficient recovery time (Bae, Nursing Overtime: Why, How Much, and Under What Working Conditions?). Continuing, “Reduced rest and recovery time leads to physiologic depletion or exhaustion that continues into the next workday. The Institute of Medicine recommended nurses work no more than 12 hours in a 24-hour period and no more than 60 hours in a 7-day period to avoid error-producing fatigue” (Bae, Nursing Overtime: Why, How Much, and Under What Working Conditions?). Nurses will not be able to abide by this recommendation from the IOM due to the need for overtime of nurses on the ICU from missing three nursing positions. This will prove to be unsafe and unhealthy for the patients and the individual nurse working so many overtime hours alike. “Excessive use of overtime increases nurse injuries, including needle stick and musculoskeletal problems” (Bae, Nursing Overtime: Why, How Much, and Under What Working…
