Mission Office Personal Statement
Mission Office, I am planning on serving a mission this July and I am writing this to show the passion that I have to forgo that plan and to make sure nothing restricts me from doing so. I am 19 years old and I attend Brigham Young University in Utah. I have always had my goals set high in everything that I do so I am very thankful to be here. I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at a young age and I want to start off by saying that CF is a part of me, but it does not control me—it does not define who I am. From a very young age, my parents have taught me what it’s like to be independent and not rely on others to do things for me that I can do for myself. They have also taught me to never quit at anything: sports, school, work, etc. As I have grown up, sports have been of my …show more content…
I was also the intramural tennis champion at BYU this past semester. I am physically capable of anything that I want to do. I have a part-time 20 hours/week job here at BYU while taking a full load of classes that I am excelling in. I more than believe that I am physically capable of serving a mission as I have never had problems physically doing anything. I have never been hospitalized for sickness as I have done my best to stay healthy—to my avail. I believe that keeping myself healthy while on a mission will not be a problem. I can do all my daily treatments in a matter of 30 minutes, which is all I need. If my schedule does not allow for that time, I will wake up as early as needed to get what I need to stay healthy, done. I refuse to let CF keep me from serving the Lord where he plans for me to serve. I do not want to be restricted to the U.S. because of this, but if the U.S. is where the Lord has planned for me to serve, I will do so tenfold with great joy. I will do everything that I must do to stay healthy physically and spiritually wherever I go so that I can have the opportunity that many other young men my age have. I believe that I am prepared to serve a mission

In The National Honors Society and Student Council my role was to fundraise money for certain organizations and our community and to raise awareness for those certain causes, while in volleyball and cheer I was a member in these sports and competitively tried to beat other teams while encouraging my own. I have participated in my college community by being involved in Christian Business Leaders, Impact, and church. In Christian Business Leaders I help our Outreach program by finding activities and ways our organization can help people, and then by carrying them out. In Impact and Church, I am involved and surrounded by people who hold each other accountable to live Christian lives and to reach out to others and show God’s…

As of now, I am a senior at Cass Technical High School. In addition, I am also the Command Sergeant Major for Cass Tech’s JROTC program. As the Command Sergeant Major, my duties include being the standard bearer for our battalion’s cadets, and leading our drill and color guard team. Besides that, I am also an active volunteer within my community and school. The last event that I participated in was earlier in the school year as the lead cadet of a concession stand at a college sports game in order to raise money for my JROTC program. Also, I have been a service learning project coordinator for a project that had the purpose of aiding the homeless citizens of Detroit. Nevertheless, the project’s goal was to provide food and hygiene products to…

The dedication I have shown to each of these aspects of my life is a reflection of my good character. My desire to succeed both in and out of the classroom has driven me to earn high grades, become a leader and give back to my community. In the past I have received constructive criticism for mostly engaging in activities that relate to my involvement with track & field. I believe my community service is misunderstood. It has been my choice to participate in the community service activities listed in my application. I chose to become a youth coach for the Little Feet Running Program and volunteer for local races and modified track & field meets because I feel I have more to offer to my community when participating in activities I can easily relate to. My passion for track and field has allowed me to establish strong relationships with…

Sense the age of twelve years old, Ive been apart of the James Island Charter High-school Track and Cross country team. For the past five years, I've developed inseparable bonds and life long skills that have helped me develop important morals in my life. This year, my senior year of high school; I chose to tell my parents, coaches, and teammates that I wouldn't be competing for our team this year and that I wasn't running cross country. As a five year varsity letterman and athlete, making the decision to not run cross country was pretty emotional and painful. The decision to not compete and to pause my athletic career for three months all started from me interviewing seniors for media tech (our schools news network).…

One extremely important activity outside of the classroom that has helped me grow as an individual is Church League basketball at my local YMCA. From the outside looking in this league seems to be a form of glorified pick-up basketball with referees and a scoreboard but there is so much more to it. Almost half way through my junior year my father convinced me to try out for the varsity basketball team at school in November to which I hesitated at first but later gave in and tried out only to be cut. At first I was upset because I had never been cut from a team and I was unsure of how to handle it and what to do with my free time. This prompted me to reach out to God and ask him for a sense of direction and purpose in this time of my life to which He responded with a friend inviting me to Church League basketball. Once I experienced a few scrimmages and practices I decided to commit to playing Church League and coming to all of the…

Joining the future business leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, becoming a youth leader at Christ Church, as well as many other volunteering activities helped me enrich my community, and make an impact in the world around me. Along with these organizations, I have played several sports in high school, in my junior and senior years I settled on my two favorite sports, track and field, and volleyball. Within these sports I have made friendships with my teammates I will never forget, and learned important lessons in humbleness when winning, and cohere with my friends when losing. By being a member of any sports teams at my high school, I regularly attended many of my school’s events, giving me the opportunity to develop relationships, and gain a tremendous sense of pride in my school. I am looking forward to bringing this same sense of pride to my college, and making many new friendships along the way. I learned over the course of my education to this point, that when I became more involved with these activities, my performance in the classroom increased alongside my…

I am excited to be doing service learning. However, I wish I had more time to get involved with Special Olympics here in Manhattan. Since my schedule is so busy I am working with the Bread Basket for my first three hours of service learning. I expect that it will be hard work, but it will be well worth the effort. I predict that I will start to love helping my community and will want to find more ways to get involved. However, I do think that basketball will prevent me from being as involved, as I would like. For my next four hours I would like to get some of those helping little kids, that is one of my favorite areas to help in. I hope that I stay involved in my service learning even after this class is over. It is important to help your community and I think I will feel good about myself for trying to make a…

There was a time in my life when I had plenty of time to dedicate to myself and all of the things I enjoy. I could spend the whole day in my garden, at the river fishing, or even experimenting with a new receipt in the kitchen. Everyone thought that I had it made, but in my eyes I felt like I was inadequate. My relationship with my husband was strained, and I could not help feeling that I could not give my children the life skills they needed to succeed. Then my husband got in a car accident and almost lost his life; it was during that time I started to think about what I wanted in life, the type of person I was, and wanted to be. I thought to myself “If my husband would have died I would not be able to provide for my family”, so I did some soul searching and came to the conclusion that I needed to make some big changes in my life.…
