Domestic Affairs emphasizes the importance of the government. Without this strand students will not recognize the important role the government plays in our society. The other major importance of the five strands is culture. Students need to be educated on the importance of diversity in the classroom as well as the diversity in the community they live in. Considering these facts, I believe that there should be no change to the Mississippi Social Studies Standards. On the other hand, the Common Core Standards are intended to do just that, which in my opinion do not benefit our students. The Common Core Standards were created for standardized tests that are not accurate in analyzing students’ knowledge. I believe with the Common Core Standards, teachers are only teaching what the students need to know to graduate high school. By doing this, students are not able to take the skills acquired and apply it to everyday life. A change should definitely be implemented with the Common Core Standards.
