The discipline of entrepreneurship has a distinct place in business administration. Entrepreneurial activities have a global impact on individual lives, careers, and also on organizational survival and growth. Entrepreneurs introduce change and innovation into the economic and social system, forcing other individuals and organizations to constantly adapt. New products and services, and new organizational practices make it very difficult for business students and professionals to settle down into routine work and linear career paths. COMM320 is a course designed to provide students with a basic understanding of this discipline.…

The atmosphere in a Trident nuclear submarine is generally calm and quiet. Even pipe joints are cushioned to prevent noise that might tip off a pursuer. The Trident ranks among the world’s most dangerous weapons—swift, silent, armed with 24 long-range missiles carrying 192 nuclear warheads. Trident crews are the cream of the Navy crop, and even the sailors who fix the plumbing exhibit a white-collar decorum. The culture aboard ship is a low-key, collegial one in which sailors learn to speak softly and share close quarters with an ever-changing roster of shipmates. Being subject to strict security restrictions enhances a sense of elitism and pride. To move up and take charge of a Trident submarine is an extraordinary feat in the Navy—fewer than half the officers qualified for such commands ever get them. When Michael Alfonso took charge of the USS Florida, the crew welcomed his arrival. They knew he was one of them—a career Navy man who joined up as a teenager and moved up through the ranks. Past shipmates remembered him as basically a loner, who could be brusque but generally pleasant enough. Neighbors on shore found Alfonso to be an unfailingly polite man who kept mostly to himself.…

Entrepreneurs are worshipped for their vast knowledge and achievements and often times, their contributions to society are praised and greatly appreciated. However, most of these successful individuals are not successful simply because of how creative or unique they are, but mainly for other reasons that are not seen at a first glance. In Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers, he writes that the success of these achievers is actually dependent on their upbringing, and the factors that made them who they are. His opinion remains true as most if not all successful people are really just ordinary people who had advantageous circumstances, favorable backgrounds, and the will to do hard work.…

In 1964, the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was passed by the United States Congress in response to the Gulf of Tonkin Incident this resolution stated “Whereas the United States is assisting the peoples of southeast Asia to protect their freedom and has no territorial, military or political ambition in that area, but desires only that these people should be left alone in peace to work out their destines in their own way: Now, therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Congress approves and supports the determination of the President, as the commander in Chief, to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression.” Even though the United States was actively taking part in South Vietnam, pre-1964, once the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was passed the amount of U.S. involvement aggressively increased.…

Since the age of 7 years old, I have been a participant of the benevolent organization Junior Achievement. My earliest memory of being a participant of Junior Achievement is when Mr. Michael Troutman visited the Boys & Girls Club of Trenton/Mercer County in 2006.Mr. Troutman taught a lesson about entrepreneurship and I was immediately compelled to learn, when he mentioned how successful entrepreneurs make a lot of money. Using what I had learned from the lesson, I started a candy business. I ran the candy business from June to late August and made a very satisfying profit. Ever since Mr. Troutman came to the Boys & Girls Club, I have stayed involved in Junior Achievement.…
