The Komagata Maru was an event in which a boat carrying 376 Punjab Indians from India, stopping briefly in Hong Kong and finally making its way to Canada was denied access into Vancouver. Maria Tallchief was born on January 24th, 1925 to a wealthy Native American family in Fairfax, Oklahoma. Her family relocated to Los Angeles when she was eight years old, and there she was able to train in ballet with professional dancers such as David Lichine and Bronislava Nijinska. Tallchief’s career really boosted when she met the infamous Russian-born choreographer George Balanchine. Balanchine made Tallchief into the first star of the New York City Ballet and the first prima ballerina of the United States (“Maria Tallchief”, UXL Biographies). Both Japanese master potter Shoji Hamada and Hong Kong potter Bernard Leach, visited her to observe her skill. Hundreds of institutions recognized her artistic contributions during her lifetime. In 1934, she became the first woman to receive the bronze medal for Indian Achievement by the Indian Fire Council. In 1939 John D. Rockefeller, Jr., a patron of her work, asked her to lay the cornerstone for the Rockefeller Center in New York City. Four universities including the University of New Mexico and the University of Colorado conferred on her the honorary doctorate degree.
