In this paper, I will compare and contrast monitoring of patient vital signs using mobile computing technology to in-patient visits to the doctor’s office or hospital. Then I will analyze the advantages and disadvantages of using mobile computing technology to monitor patients. I will also assess the security concerns with regards to the transmission of personal medical information over wireless networks. Finally, I will assess the issues of social networking for group support for patients with similar medical concerns.
Vital signs include your heart beat, breathing rate, temperature, and blood pressure. This is imperative information in reference to a patient’s health. These signs are now being monitored with mobile computing. Mobile computing is defined as the ability of a computing device and services associated with are mobile, allowing it to be loaded or transported staying connected to the network or the Internet. This is changing the relationships between human and computers. Studies show that a good way to have an overview of the patient health is through the vital signs (Lima, 2002), and not only patients admitted to the ICU require continuous follow-up of those signs. Before mobile computing, patient’s vital signs were being recorded on charts and placed in patients files for referencing. Patients are now able to use technology to monitor their vital signs without having to visit the doctor’s office or hospital. The patient’s vital signs are uploaded to the medical servers after the vitals are taken on the mobile device. This is convenient for both patient and doctor. It allows patients to become more proactive with monitoring their health issues. Hospitals are now able to transmit data
