It leads to major human interactions which affect the development of one’s social identity and belief system. The question here is does mobile phones help improve family relationships or do they add to more damage?
First of all, mobile phones in general affects all aspects of our lives. The point of having a phone among family members is to make life easier. Mobile phones are without a doubt the most accessible as it acts upon connecting people from all over the world. It helps parents to monitor their children on a daily basis for example.
Secondly, mobile phones can be used as a form of a punishment for children who misbehaved. This is a common family culture where if one did something deviant then something precious of their belongings has to be taken away as a lesson. Another example would be during the exams, some parents would keep their children’ phones up until they finish their exams to ensure that they are really doing their revision without any distraction or procrastinating.
Moreover, some parents buy their childrens mobile phones to reinforce responsibility and sense of maturity. The fact that mobile phones are very important to young people, they are willing to be most things. For example, working part time to pay their telephone bills or credit usages, this also lead to positive behavior like saving money.
There is a dark side to mobile phones usage on family relationships. Over usage can lead to harmful subsequences specifically to health, such as addiction. The younger population feel that they lost part of themselves without their mobile phones, to a point of being Nomophobia. This radical behavior leads to problem of divided attentions.
