Mobile Value Added Services (MVAS) - A vehicle to usher in inclusive growth and bridge the digital divide

3

Message from Chairman, TRAI

I would like to compliment the ASSOCHAM for bringing out a Study Report on Mobile Value Added Services – A Vehicle to Usher in Inclusive Growth and Bridge the Digital Divide in India. Mobile Value Added Services (MVAS) have assumed significant importance in recent times due to the rapid growth in wireless subscriber base. They have enhanced the utility of mobile phone as a powerful medium to deliver information viz., News, Entertainment, Advertisement, Music, Games, Commerce, Education and Health. Simultaneously, they help the service

providers in generating new revenue streams as also the consumers in receiving the benefits of personalised applications. I am sure that the analysis and inputs given by the ASSOCHAM in the Study Report will be useful in framing suitable policies with regard to MVAS.

The contemporary school of thought in service science is currently dominated by the notion of service-centric services (Lusch & Vargo, 2008), whereby it is believed that the end users are the determinant of value of a given service and co-producing a service with the end users would enhance the value of the service. A main assumption made by this school of thought is that all aspect of services, from creation to delivery process, is the domain of the service providers. However, the emergence of disruptive technologies such as the internet, social media, etc has reduced the operational barriers, empowering the end users to become services provider themselves. This empowerment has led to the creation of what is known as user generated services. Such services potentially challenge the complementary notion of service-centric services. Hence, in my term paper, I shall examine how user generated services has affected the service dynamic between the service providers and the end users, using the mobile phone service industry as a backdrop. Firstly, I would define what is exactly is user generated services. Then, I will discuss about user generated services in the mobile phone service industry. Last but not least, I would explore how mobile phone service providers can leverage user generated services, regardless of the service model that the service providers adopt.…

The digital divide is beginning to close. The flow of digital information – through mobile phones, text messaging, and the Internet – is now reaching the world’s masses, even in the poorest countries, bringing with it a revolution in economics, politics, and society. In my opinion, the technological innovation that has had the greatest impact on our lives in this country today would be the mobile telecommunication technology. For the last ten to fifteen years, mobile phones have changed our lives in such a way that no other technological change has before. Earlier, people used to book telephone calls in advance, had to go and use near the telephone booths, or sit beside a physical telephone instrument kept in the drawing room of a house, and attend to, or make calls stuck to a place. Now, people simply carry a 200 gram device in their pockets and can travel the world, always connected to their loved ones and business partners, no matter in whatever remote part of the world they are. (However, in certain countries, mobile coverage…

Thanks to increasingly advanced technology development, explosion of smartphone usage during the past years has affected every side of life. Particularly in e-commerce, for example online retail industry, smartphone has had great influence on, directly motivating continuous innovation in this field. According to the IMRG Capgemini eRetail Sales Index, the online retail market was up by 20 per cent year-on-year in September in 2013, and up 13 per cent in the previous month – the highest growth seen in the Index 's 13 year history. This record was driven by the increasing use of mobile devices, especially smartphone. Smartphone sales went up 150 per cent year-on-year, and accounted for 23 per cent of all mobile sales during September in 2013, compared to 15 per cent last month. Annual mobile commerce defined as the value of goods and services purchased while using smartphones and tablets grew by more than 81 percent, to $24.8 billion in 2012 from $13.6 billion in 2011, according to an eMarketer report. It’s easy to name “mobility” and “wireless” as trends, but it’s less clear exactly what direction these developments are taking and how they can be used to improve business. One can hardly pick up a business or IT magazine without seeing multiple articles about the growth of mobile and wireless technologies. And it seems people can’t put down their PDAs, smart phones and other mobile computing and communications devices, at least when judging by the adoption rates and future growth projections.…

This paper attempts to understand the underlying concepts of Mobile Marketing, which is defined as, “the use of the mobile medium as a communications and entertainment channel between a brand and an end-user.” Mobile marketing is more than a trendy new media channel; it is a powerful communication tool with considerable audience reach and awareness. Also tries to estimate the significant opportunities for growth existing in this sector, however advertising and marketing agencies are failing to promote the value of mobile marketing to clients as they wrongly believe consumers will reject this tool. A study reveals that the mobile landscape of 2012 is ripe with innumerable possibilities of nearly 5.3-billion people having mobile phones and infact more than half of mobile subscribers are willing to embrace mobile promotions, when carefully targeted and for appropriate services. Mobile data traffic is trebling every year and M-Commerce(Mobile commerce) is undergoing rampant change. Retailers and consumers are racing for devices and applications with capabilities that they’ve never had before. It is also predicted that more than 10-trillion text messages will be sent next year. Text messaging programmes will account for about $14-billion of the over $19 billion meaning lot more will be spent on mobile campaigns in 2012. Mobile advertising networks have delivered 350-billion global impressions in 2011, generating $800-million in media spend, and earning $275-million in revenue. The US market generated 50% of gross media spend, with Europe and Asia both at around 25%.The mobile web will be a leading channel in 2012. Mobile search will be the dominant activity for engaging people with branded communications, according to Google. Mobile search could become as big for Google, if not bigger, than desktop search. While the future of mobile marketing may be exciting, there is a rather…

The cloud phone offers a cheaper, more convenient alternative because it gives individuals who cannot buy a handset their own phone numbers and mobile services. This model presents mutual advantages for both the poor as well as the start-up. In other words, their service is priced for base-of-the-pyramid customers and the mobile network carriers get a piece of the action. This model is a demonstration that innovation can spur ventures that sell services aimed at the poor in a way that creates value at the base of the pyramid as well as to the investors.…

We are in the era of service-based economies. The services sector has grown to dominate economic activity in today’s advanced industrial economies. Interestingly, within the growing service-dominated economies, increased innovation in Information Technology (IT) has dramatically altered services conceptualization, development, delivery and consumption. By extending the definition of an electronic service, we define IME services as being mediated via information technology (IT) where the consumer interacts with an appropriate user interface such as web site, mobile phone, iPhone, PDA, iPad, virtual world environment, tablets, etc., in order to gain a consumption experience and pursue desired benefits for another entity or the entity itself (self-service). Innovations related to IT and novel Internet-based service delivery in IMEs and consumption are fueling extraordinary growth in demand for existing as well as new services.…
