Moby Dick And Ahab Foil
In Moby Dick a foil, where a character who contrasts with another character in order to highlight particular qualities of one character, is used between the morality of Starbuck and Stubb to show the morality of Ahab. Captain Ahab makes it clear that the main goal for this voyage is to catch Moby Dick, however, Starbuck claims, “to be enraged with a dumb thing, Captain Ahab, seems blasphemous.” (Melville 312). Starbuck thinks that having your main goal of this voyage to be, to solely seek vengeance on one whale is madness, which shows you how that in comparison to Starbuck, Ahab is not acting morally in this instance. Stubb has absolutely no fears, especially for whales, and neither does Ahab, but Starbuck wants no whaler “who is not afraid

The book “Moby Dick” is a very interesting book with many interesting characters. The main character of this story is Captain Ahab. Captain Ahab is a man who is obsessed with finding the Great White Whale. I believe that the most interesting thing about Captain Ahab is how he is so obsessed with trying to find the great white whale that in my head I think that his obsession will make him insane. The reason for his obsession for finding the Great White Whale came from When Moby Dick Bit off one of his legs which left him with a prosthetic leg made out of whalebones. This is the reason for Captain Ahab's obsession…

Captain Ahab’s great white whale brings him destruction in the famous “Moby Dick”, but actual whales glide graceful and effortless through the ocean almost all of time. After the white whale in “Moby Dick”, there is perhaps no whale more well known among enthusiasts and scientists alike than Migaloo the white humpback whale. Migaloo the white humpback whale has been spotted this week off the coast of New Zealand as he makes his annual migration to warmer waters.…

The novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville is an epic tale of the voyage of the whaling ship the Pequod and its captain, Ahab, who relentlessly pursues the great Sperm Whale during a journey around the world. The narrator of the novel is Ishmael, a sailor on the Pequod who undertakes the journey out of his affection for the sea. He also doesn’t want to be in an important position, such as captain or cook, because then he’d have responsibilities, and that would really get him down to work and be able to have things to fill up his schedule during the day. Ishmael says that being a lowly sailor and getting ordered around does take some getting used to. He hadn’t really packed many things for his voyage just a few carpetbags and clothes. When he had entered the spouter inn he looked around being amazed about…

Today every person has a reason for why they achieve and fail at their struggles. For instance, in Moby Dick, Ahab’s struggle is to conquer and kill Moby Dick. His madness and hatred drives him to continue and to complete this impossible task. Herman Melville expresses Ahab’s madness in the quote, "Aye, aye! and I’ll chase him round Good Hope, and round the Horn, and round the Norway Maelstrom, and round perdition’s flames before I give him up. And this is what ye have shipped for, men! to chase that white whale on both sides of land, and over all sides of earth, till he spouts black blood and rolls fin out” (36.32). Ahab is driven insane to overcome his great struggle and to him the whale is his fatal flaw. What I strive for is to get accepted into Arizona State University Honors College, Barrett.…

In our society there are certain individuals who we look up to as heroes. While these heroes may seem to represent admirable qualities on the surface, what they truly represent can often be something far worse. This is relevant in every aspect of our lives from athletes, to celebrities, to even politicians. While people may look up to them as role models or as heroes because of their actions, they may not be aware of what these "heroes" are concealing. In Tender is the Night, F. Scott Fitzgerald introduces Dick Diver, a wealthy psychologist who's charismatic personality draws people to him. While he appears to be the perfect man for others to depend on, Dick Diver has his own personal flaws, which causes him to fail those who need him and…

A foil is a character who contrasts with another character; it is used to make the traits of the other character emphasized. Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby are completely opposite characters, and are developed as foil characters based on their characteristics, how they got wealthy, their goals in life, and their love they have for Daisy. In the novel “The Great Gatsby”, Tom is portrayed as a very brutal and cruel person. He is arrogant and extremely racist and treats women as secondary beings. He shows less respect towards women; He even sees his wife Daisy as an unimportant and less superior person than him. “Now he was a sturdy straw-haired man of thirty with rather hard mouth and supercilious manner. Two shining arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward… It was a body of enormous leverage – a cruel body” (Fitzgerald pg. 7), this quote gives a detailed description on how Tom Buchanan is portrayed in this novel. Meanwhile, Gatsby is very calm and gentle character who shows and treats every person with the same respect because he knew what it was like being in the low class or poor. He treats daisy like a precious diamond, he would do anything to get her and give up anything for her. Another reason why Gatsby and Tom are completely opposite characters is because how they got…

An example would be in the middle of the book, when Ralph explains the rules and reminds the boys he is chief and explains the new rule that “we [the boys] won’t have a fire anywhere but on the mountain. Ever.” (81). Ralph knows how to exert his power when needed and be convincing; indicating he is not indecisive, nevertheless he is an honorable leader. In addition to Ralph being an honorable leader, when majority of people had left Ralph’s tribe to join Jack’s tribe, who are savages, Ralph refuses “to put on war-paint and be a savage” (142) and join Jack’s tribe. Ralph recognizes that the war-paint symbolizes savagery, and that the second if he puts the paint on, he too will become a savage. He stays strong and does his best to not fall to the hands of savagery, because he knows they will never obtain rescue and keeps that hope. This shows how Ralph strong on his opinions, and is an honorable…

Through his novel Moby Dick, it is obvious that during his life Herman Melville experienced conflicts in his religious beliefs, an understandable outcome stemming from the intellectual background of the nineteenth century. There existed during Melville’s time, a contradiction between the Calvinist theory of predestination, with its idea of inborn immorality and original sin, and Ralph Waldo Emerson’s concept of Transcendentalism, which emphasized the idea of inherent goodness and self-reliance. Critics have long debated Melville’s shared beliefs with Emerson and Transcendentalism and his faithfulness to the Calvinist religion. Moby Dick reflects the conflict between Calvinism and Transcendentalism as, through the characters and the biblical…

A categorical imperative is an unconditional command, where a hypothetical imperative is a self-command or a goal that is set, driven off of desire within oneself. This applies to both Ishmael and Ahab, but especially Ahab. Immanuel Kant would be understanding of Ahab’s motivation to kill Moby Dick, and would say that his vengeance has valid reason, but that doesn’t necessarily make him a good person. Ahab does not have much devotion to morality, his devotion is to Moby Dick. Although his motivation is valid, the steps which he took to get to Moby Dick were not completely moral. Although everyone on the ship would have benefited from Killing Moby Dick, financially or emotionally, you could argue that Ahab is selfish and is using his crew to help get what he wants, because he clearly wants Moby Dick more than anyone else. If Stubb was to call someone the devil, it should have been Moby Dick. The infamous whale is the one that is truly controlling Ahab’s conscience. He has driven Ahab to the point where he would put his entire crew’s life on the line simply to gain pleasure from killing him. Kant believes that suicide is selfish and immoral. Ahab was very aware of the danger Moby Dick poses to him, and he was willing to risk his life going after him, it was basically suicide. Kant would see Ahab as a bad person, with potential to become…

Over the ages, human behavior has shown that purity of thought leads to a similar action and ultimately to an outcome that is consistent with the original thought. Conversely, the history of man is tainted with his inherent lust for power and greed causing great conflict. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the author contrasts the moral thoughts and deeds of his flawed hero Ralph to the self gratifying motives and actions of his adversary Jack. The ebb and flow of good versus evil on the island is driven by the waves of positive and negative thoughts in the minds of the two main characters. Ralph and Jack’s continuous struggle of good versus evil is not only between…
