Abstract

The design project of the group was to create an experiment for Thermo/Fluids Laboratory. The experiment will help aide the students in relating pressure drop and heat transfer in a cross flow heat exchanger. The experiment consists of three cross flow heat exchangers (bare inline, bare staggered, and finned staggered) that will cool hot water with current fan in the Laboratory. Optimal flow rates, pressure and temperature drops were calculated for each case. Currently, a Lab View system is in process of being completed that will verify calculations made and give the students a better understanding of what is happening. So far there is one heat exchanger complete and two in processes. The heat exchanger will be operated in an ambient environment along with the attachment ducts.

Description of Work

This semester began with attempting to sort out the instruments purchased from Mamac Systems. Last semester's order was reviewed in greater detail and it was found that the instruments were incorrectly order due to many factors that involved an unclear website and an inexperienced student, which led to purchasing sensors without transducers that output a voltage. The majority of the equipment will have to be return and replace.

The drawings of the shell of the heat exchanger (shell of exchanger is the same for each configuration, and only vary in way the tubes are aligned) were sent out to Northridge's Plant Management and after a few meetings to clarify drawings the shell of the inline configuration was created. The shell was made without the through holes needed for the tubes, which was done by the group in the laboratory. Twenty eight 14" copper pipes were cut and solder to 90 degree elbows, which were modified to fit our arrangement. Procedure: In order to perform this lab I needed the following materials: a metric ruler, table salt, small number of ice cubes, piece of string, flame source, rubbing alcohol, tap water, distilled water, paper, colored liquid drink, 100mL glass beaker, burner-fuel, burner-stand, 25 mL cylinder, 25mL volumetric flask, 2mL pipet, rubber bulb, goggles, 500g digital scale, test tube measuring 13x100mm, thermometer, small bolt, magnet bar, and an empty short stem pipet. To start off this lab assignment I measured the length of three objects in centimeters and millimeters with a metric ruler. I measured a knife, lighter, and a standard pack of UNO cards. I recorded the data. Next, I measured the temperature of hot water, boiling water, and boiling water after 5 minutes in Celsius. Then I proceeded to measure the temperature of cold water, ice water, and ice water after 5 minutes. I recorded this data. For this I used my 100mL beaker and hot water. I then used the wire gauze burner stand and the fuel burner in order to bring the water to boil. I measure the temperatures with my thermometer. I then let the beaker cool and measure cold water from the tap and then added ice cubes to the water in order to measure ice water’s temperature with the thermometer. Next, I measure the volume of a test tube by filling the test tube with water and pouring the water into my 25mL graduated cylinder. I recorded this volume.     Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Generic Letter 89-13 requires periodic testing of all raw-water-cooled safety-related heat exchangers to ensure that the General Design Criteria of 10 CFR Part 50 are being met. Specifically, GL 89-13 addresses the requirements of GDC 44--Cooling Water, GDC 45--Inspection of Cooling Water System, and GDC 46--Testing of Cooling Water System. The heat exchangers associated with the Emergency Diesel Generators (EDG) at most nuclear power plants are raw-water cooled and safety-related, and therefore, fall under the requirements of GL 89-13. Whereas most of the larger safety-related heat exchangers can be tested and the resulting data reduced to an easily understood baseline value such as fouling factor, the EDG heat exchangers usually can not be tested in this manner due to lack of instrumentation, complex piping configurations, and automatic temperature-sensing flow control valves. The operational questions posed by GL 89-13 could be resolved readily if the EDG heat exchangers could be tested exactly at the conditions required or postulated by the most limiting accident scenario. Some of these parameters, such as kilowatt loading, can be easily attained; however, certain parameters such as the cooling water inlet temperature, or the external ambient air temperature may not be controllable.
